The Hiawatha Buzz!
January 31, 2020
Growing hearts and minds for a better today and tomorrow: every day, every way, every one.
Principal's Messages
Dear Hiawatha families,
I want to recognize and thank our wonderful PTO for bringing the Inform and Inspire Speaker Series to our whole school community. We had such a meaningful experience Wednesday night as Dr. Marissa Coleman, a Hiawatha parent, led us in an interactive presentation entitled Raising Inclusive Kids: Talking to Kids About Race. This community event was well attended by faculty, staff, parents and community members. It paired well with our Implicit Bias training that all faculty and staff participated in on MLK Day. This essential work supports our district commitment to building equity across our district. I hope to see many of you at the next one, Raising Inclusive Kids: A Parent's Toolkit for LGBTQIA Issues, led by Amber Leventry, another Hiawatha parent.
Take care,
Katherine Grykien

Winter Outdoor Gear Reminder
During the winter months, please send your student to school with a hat, a pair of gloves or mittens, a coat, snow pants, and boots. If students do not have boots and snow pants, they will need to stay on paved areas of the playground during recess. This is done to keep them dry.
Also, please pack shoes for your student to wear inside the school building. Wearing wet snow boots is not only uncomfortable but makes for wet floors, which can lead to injury.
If you need assistance with obtaining winter gear, please contact me or Mrs. Grykien (kgrykien@ewsd.org).
Thank you,
Reyna Maher, RN
