Welcome Katy Tanis
Artist/Illustrator Katy Tanis will be live, virtually, to present her book, Animal Olympics, discuss the animals and her research, answer questions, and engage our students with an activity during school on Dec 14th. The 3rd-5th grade presentation will be from 9-10 and the K-2nd grade presentation will be from 2-2:45.
Mrs. Boyd & Ms. Mitterman will introduce all library classes to the illustrator and the featured book this week. We will also highlight Ms. Tanis’ work on our Library Website.
Katy Tanis - Artist, Illustrator, Author, Wildlife Conservationist, and Explorer!
Katy Tanis is an explorer, illustrator, and children’s book author. She grew up in northern NJ and now lives at the Jersey shore. She spends most of her days drawing but occasionally wanders to far-off places, like Madagascar, to search for cool creatures. Her work is inspired by specific ecosystems and the wonderful webs of life that they contain. She has a soft spot for the more unusual creatures of the animal kingdom. She also never met a color she didn’t like!
Featured Book -- Animal Olympics
This fascinating book for readers aged 5+ examines the incredible abilities of animals from all around the globe with a captivating and original conceit – in Animal Olympics, the creatures are competing, and the reader has a front-row seat to the action.
In each event, animals are awarded bronze, silver, or gold for their skills. Events featured in the book include diving, wrestling, rock climbing, and gymnastics. Readers will discover all kinds of astounding animals, from the bar-headed goose, which flies at heights of up to 6,300 metres, to the flic-flac spider, which cartwheels across the Moroccan desert. Fun vignettes show the animals in their heat and are accompanied by absorbing fact-packed captions.

I am the Jungle; A Yoga Adventure
In addition to learning basic yoga poses, children will learn to identify different emotions while practicing those poses. Butterfly Pose helps you feel calm and centered, Tree Pose brings feelings of being grounded and well balanced, and Turaco Pose lets you get your playful on! The back of the book includes a parents’ and teachers’ guide with Sanskrit names and the physical benefits of each yoga pose."

Author-illustrator Katy Tanis is currently earning a MA in Biology from Miami University of Ohio. Her graduate work, partnering with the Wildlife Conservation Society, explores the promotion of conservation biology through art.
