Mrs. Foley's Counselor Corner
February, 2021
Dear Suamico Elementary Parents/Guardians,
This month is all about spreading kindness at Suamico Elementary. Now that we are back in the swing of things at school we get to refocus our attention on how to treat one another and ourselves with grace, understanding, compassion, and respect. Our Student Council committee is promoting the well-timed GREAT KINDNESS CHALLENGE! All students are asked to perform kind acts to check off on their Seesaw or paper checklists. Please ask your child about the Great Kindness Challenge and how they are coming along with their checklist (Seesaw or paper). Below you'll find some more ideas to spread kindness outside of school and please encourage your child to show kindness to themselves as well. Here at Suamico Elementary we use "Habit 7 - Sharpen the Saw" when we talk about finding the balance in our lives, our body, heart, mind and soul. Enjoy this Suamico Elementary student made Kindness Challenge Video used to kick off the Great Kindness Challenge.
(Please feel free to check back for updates as I'll be updating this newsletter for the whole month of February.)
Life Skills Class
In Life Skills class this month we are combining the topic of Kindness with the whole school Kindness Challenge. One activity your child will be doing is showing their artistic ability in making a poster and sharing the importance of kindness in a Flipgrid video. We talk about why kindness is important and the ways we can spread kindness to others and ourselves. Once students have completed their Kindness Challenge they will be given a heart to mark down the number of kind acts they have performed over the two weeks. This heart will hang above their hook for all students/staff to see. See below for a few music videos that students may hear during Life Skills class this month.
In Kindergarten we read the book "I am NOT just a Scribble" which celebrates inclusion and acceptance of our differences (see below for our scribble guy art). First graders read the book "Because Amelia Smiled" which discusses the importance of being a part of the kindness domino effect and then we made smiles to tape to the outside of our masks. Second grade we are reading "We're All Wonders" and creating a graffiti wonder wall of listing character traits that make us special and unique.
Now that we are back to in person learning I will resume my schedule of visiting all classrooms for a 30 minute lesson every other week.Feelings Exploration Room with Mrs. Foley
