From our Principal, Mr. Nihill

Dear Mary Woodward Families,

Lindsay Darr has been an integral part of our office staff for the past 16 years. Lindsay, our head secretary, will be retiring at the end of this school year. Her positive attitude and amazing recall of student and parent names will be missed. Lindsay takes the time to get to know everyone in our school community and this helps her build a special bond with our families. She is always at the ready whether a student needs a bandaid, an ice pack or just a friendly greeting. I have heard from many parents who have told me how appreciative they are of Lindsay and her willingness to go above and beyond what any situation may call for. Lindsay's caring attitude and dedication will be missed greatly by our school community.

Congratulations Lindsay!

Teacher Appreciation Week

May 3-7 is Teacher Appreciation Week. Our teachers at Mary Woodward have been tested this year like never before. Our staff has risen to the occasion by displaying their creativity and grit at a whole new level. Our staff has come up with a variety of ways to keep students engaged. They have made home visits, organized virtual field trips, hosted craft clubs, lunch groups, delivered supplies, helped families with internet connectivity issues, the list goes on and on. I am honored to be a part of this amazing group of educators.

Our PSO is putting together some fun ways next week to recognize our staff. More information below on what PSO is planning to honor our teachers and staff.

Take care,

Jerry Nihill

From our PSO:

This coming week, May 3-7 is National Teacher/Staff Appreciation week! Our teachers and staff have worked SO incredibly hard under extremely challenging circumstances to help our kids! Now it’s our turn to show them our support! Below is a schedule of events and activities for both hybrid and CDL students to help celebrate our fabulous staff at Mary Woodward.
In addition to these activities, there will be a daily raffle of gift cards. Each staff members name will be put in a hat and drawn out. Everyone has a chance to win some great prizes!

Monday May 3-
CDL students- send your teacher and favorite staff member a video of a song/hold up a note/say “My favorite thing about you is....” wish them a good day!
Hybrid students- bring a flower/card/treat to your teacher and/or staff member, and/or do the recordings as the CDL students are doing.

Tuesday May 4-
Staff will be greeted with coffee/tea and donut holes because we care a “hole” lot about them. There will also be rolls of lifesavers for them as they have been a lifesaver to our kids.

Wednesday May 5-
While the proposed staff room remodel project has hit a few obstacles, the room can still be made more welcoming and appealing by having a visit from a “magic cleaning fairy”. This visit will include doing a deep cleaning and getting a few new items (dish drainer, scrubbers, dish soap refills, matching salt and pepper shakers etc...)

Thursday May 6-
Dress up as your favorite Mary Woodward adult and send them a picture! This is meant to be a fun way to “be a teacher for a day”. Maybe play a song for Mrs. Mullins, show a new game to Mr. B, design an obstacle course for Mrs. Niemi, and/or wear something that makes you think of your teacher.

Friday May 7-
It’s get ready to “Chillax” for the weekend!
Staff will be sent off to chill and relax over the weekend with gifts of bath bombs, candles, candy, bookmarks, and other comfort items.

Of course parents and students are always welcome to show staff appreciation in other ways as well. A card or just simply saying “Thank You” is incredibly uplifting!

Attendance Information

MW Attendance Line

Attendance Email:

If your student is absent from school, it is your responsibility to call the Attendance Line, 503.431.4720 or email as early in the day as possible.

Because of the shortened school day, the automated attendance calls will start very early for each hybrid session. Automated calls go out for unexcused absences at 8:45 AM for the morning session and at 1:00 PM for the afternoon session. Our attendance secretary, Mrs. Debbie McRobert must hear from you early to excuse the absence before the robo calls start. Remember, Wednesdays will continue the same as before, with a morning meeting online, and asynchronous learning the rest of the day. Hybrid students do NOT come to the building on Wednesdays, but there is still school and attendance is taken.

It's great if you email the teacher if your student is absent, but please email the office at as well. You can simply copy us on the email that you send to the teacher so you don't have to write two emails.

This is a good habit to start building whether your child is doing 100% online or hybrid instruction. Student safety is a priority at Mary Woodward, and it it essential that we hear from you whenever your child is absent from school.
