DIALOGUE WITH DANIELLE ROMINE - HCSD Director of Elementary Curriculum

From time to time the math coaches meet with Danielle Romine to discuss questions from the field. Here are a few of the items we have discussed.

OTHER QUESTIONS FROM THE FIELD

You are not the only one who wants to know. Here are some answers to questions we have been asked while out and about in your buildings.

Question: What are your thoughts on assessing place value?

Answer: Check out Marilyn Burns: Place Value - How to assess Students' Understanding

Question: Are there ways to incorporate literature into my math lessons?

Answer: Coaches would be happy to model or discuss ideas.

TEACHING STRATEGIES

"Life as a teacher begins the day you realize you are ALWAYS a LEARNER." - Robert John Meehan

Building NUMBER SENSE

Building on last week's discussion on how to build number sense, here are some ideas:

Strategy #4: Make estimation an integral part of computing

"When students give an estimate, I write it in a wavy cloud. Then, when we figure out an answer, we refer back to the estimate. Sometimes an estimate helps confirm that an answer is reasonable. Other times, when an estimate is far off, it provides the basis for rich discussion about why it didn't make sense. "

Students may say "We haven't learned that yet". The teacher could respond with "What I'm interested in is what you think might be a good estimate for the answer."

Have them think by themselves for a moment, and then with a partner and then have them offer possibilities. Use their estimates as a jumping off point to discuss how to think about getting an exact answer. Not only is it good experience for students to explain their reasoning but now there are invested in knowing the "real" answer and how to figure it out.

Here is an example taken from Marilyn Burns's Blog: May 11, 2013
