SCHOOL HAPPENINGS
Immigration Day at Middle Road School
On April 23, 2015, “steamships” arrived at the Middle Road School gymnasium. With Neil Diamond’s “Coming to America” playing, third and fourth graders disembarked from their ships and found themselves at Ellis Island. They carried special possessions in their bags, made their way through the Check In station, physical examinations, language and math stations hoping to pass and become American citizens. The lucky ones made it to the Passport Check, Pledge Station and were able to eat bananas, apples, bread, butter and milk at the Ellis Island Dining Room.
This authentic learning activity was part of a social studies teaching unit on Immigration. As part of the Monmouth University Professional Development School partnership, the Monmouth University students taking their social studies methods class at Middle Road served as Check In Officers, doctors & testers and helped to make the experience come alive for our students. This was an enjoyable learning experience for all students.
College and Career Day at Hazlet Middle School
Hazlet Middle School hosted a College and Career Day on May 28th. Students from Fairleigh Dickinson University and Rutgers University hosted a "College Row" scavenger hunt, in which the middle school students discovered information about colleges throughout New Jersey. The middle schoolers also visited the Career Fair and had an opportunity to meet representatives from a wide variety of professions. Students were provided with a list of suggested questions, and they circulated among the career tables to learn about each profession, see demonstrations, and speak with the professionals. Visitors included a physical therapist from Bayshore Hospital, a Broadway actor turned Registered Nurse, sales representatives from Varsity Spirit Wear and Six Flags, an Executive Chef from Monmouth Beach Tavern, an officer from the Hazlet Police Department, and a NY JETS sports broadcaster!
