YOU
Do you want to do some volunteer work and maybe combine it with a holiday or a trip through the country? No problem! A number of volunteers from Asse, Ghent and the surrounding area have already done it last year. They will tell you all about the pitfalls and the positive points. You receive information on what to expect and numerous useful folders about subsidies. Your age or family situation don’t matter! What matters is that you’re willing to give us a hand. Ukukhanya is looking for people who want to teach handicraft (stitching, knitting, ...) who want to build local gardens, who want to ??? (snap ik niet?). We are also looking for people who want to teach English, computer skills or first aid. The minimum time of stay is three weeks. So if you’ve got lots of energy, empathy and a realistic view on the daily life in a township, if you are willing and able and over 19 years old on the moment of arrival, Ukukhanya expects you on 6 April in Asse. At the end of the presentation, we will show you a picture projection so you get a clear view of what you can expect.
YOUR STUFF
On Saturday 6 April we collect goods for South Africa. Ukukhanya, an organization of volunteers who work in the Durban townships, sends the goods in a container to South Africa, also thanks to the support of Grosa (the council of cooperation and development in Asse). Ukukhanya is looking for working quality material such as toys, clothing and shoes, children’s bikes, buggies, computers, English schoolbooks and material, material for agriculture, bed linen, new kitchen material, football material, party tents, musical instruments, toothbrushes, electrical equipment... Bring your goods on Saturday 6 April to ‘t Smiske and the Ukukhanya volunteers will check with you what can be transported. They will immediately put everything in boxes. If you want, you can also add a personal message. The container leaves for South Africa in April or May and will arrive during the summer holidays. Please help us out!
YOUR MONEY
You can’t come to South Africa or you haven’t got goods to send over but you still want to give us a hand? No problem: bring some money to ‘t Smiske on 6 April or transfer it to our account. We will use it to help the local population. At the end of the year, you will get a report with details on how your money has been used. In 2011 we supported the local school with computers and computer lessons, stitching machines and stitching lessons. In 2012 we built two water towers that were painted afterwards by young people participating in the Nelson Mandela Art Project. Each year, we take a small step forward but in the long term this really makes a lasting difference. We count on your support.
