8th Grade Promotion Ceremony
Letter detailing specifics for 8th graders will go home in Friday Folders, May 5th.
Frequent Q & A's
1. What is the dress code? Professional Dress, young men...slacks and collared shirts minimum...ties and suits preferred young ladies...dresses, skirts/slack and blouses, shoes to walk across the stage comfortably to avoid falls (School Dress Code must be followed with appropriate length. The stage is elevated, so the length is very important. No strapless, spaghetti straps, or backs out; a jacket will need to worn for dresses with these characteristics.
2. Can we bring balloons? Yes, but they will have to remain in the hallway to avoid obstruction of view for other families. NO NOISE MAKERS! This is a ceremony and we will conduct ourselves with a high level of decorum.
3. Can we bring our student to the facility with us? NO, all 8th graders participating in the ceremony must attend school that day and we will transport them to Life Church. This is important as activities have been planned for the morning and the district expects students to be transported.
4. How many guests can we bring? As many as you'd like. The facility is great and can accommodate our students and their guests.
5. Can my 8th grader go home with me after the ceremony? Yes! It is important that you complete the letter so that we can get students back to Summit who will not be going home with a parent and need to catch a bus. So please complete the form and communicate that with your middle schooler's 7th hour teacher.
6. Does my child have to attend? No, but it is preferred. All students will be recognized, but if your child will not be in attendance, please communicate that on the form sent home on May 5th.
*This is a promotion and awards ceremony purposefully scheduled for the last day of school. Students who make poor choices and are suspended at the end of the year that may include the last day of school, will not be allowed to participate in the ceremony.

Additional Information:
Dear Parents of Sixth Grade Students,
The Oklahoma State Board of Health recently added a new vaccine requirement for seventh grade students. Beginning in the Fall 2011 school semester, all seventh grade students must show proof of having received one dose of Tdap (tetanus, diphtheria and pertussis) vaccine before attendance is allowed. To meet this requirement, an immunization record must be provided to the school showing the date your child received the vaccine and a signature or stamp of the doctor or clinic that provided the vaccine. If your child has already received this dose, he or she will not be required to receive it again. Please bring the record with you when you pre-enroll or enroll your child for the seventh grade. Parents may also request and complete an immunization exemption form for valid medical, religious or philosophical concerns. These forms may be requested from the school.
Tdap vaccine is considered a booster to the DTaP (diphtheria, tetanus and pertussis) vaccine that is required for Kindergarten entry. Tdap vaccine provides continued protection to students from three diseases: tetanus (lockjaw), diphtheria, and pertussis (whooping cough). Whooping cough has been on the rise in the U.S., especially among pre-teens and teenagers 10 through 19 years of age and children under 5 years of age. All of these diseases can have very serious consequences including death.
Tdap vaccine is available from your doctor, clinic or healthcare provider and is covered by most health insurance plans. All county health departments also provide Tdap vaccine, especially for children who do not have health insurance. Please contact your healthcare provider or local health department to schedule an appointment or to find out the hours when vaccines are given. Two other vaccines are also recommended for all adolescents at 11-12 years of age: meningococcal vaccine (MCV4) and human papillomavirus vaccine (HPV). Although neither of these vaccines are required for school entry, you are encouraged to ask your doctor or healthcare provider about these vaccines when your child receives the Tdap vaccine.
For more information about Tdap vaccine, HPV vaccine, and MCV4 vaccine please refer to the enclosed information sheet or visit the Oklahoma State Department of Health Immunization Service website at http://imm.health.ok.gov. Thank you for your cooperation in keeping our students protected.

Back to the Basics
Behavior incidents have escalated and are impeding the teaching and learning in many of our classes. I know that testing is over, but we continue to have school. Teachers have been directed to continue teaching bell-to-bell even through the last day of school. A great educator once said, "Free Time is educational sabotage." J.Berckmeyer
We will spend time on task until the last bell rings.
We will not tolerate students being purposeful in making poor choices and will have to provide consequences to include AISP and Suspension. Please visit with your Summit Middle Schooler about the expectations at Summit. We'd like to finish strong with all of our students, but understand that some will not be here on the last day if they continue to break the rules.
Thank you for your support!
