A Peek at Our Week
February 5, 2018
MATH:
2.2 - This week students are learning to add and subtract within 1000, using models and strategies based on place value and properties of operations. Keep practicing addition and subtraction facts at home!
3.1 - We'll be continuing our study of the three properties of addition and adding addition up to the thousands and multi-step word problems. The 4-step plan we use to solve word problems is:
U-understand the problem, what is known and what needs to be solved for
P-plan how to solve
S-solve
C-check the answer with estimation and rounding
Please continue to practice multiplication facts every day. We play Multiplication Knockout and it's really obvious who is practicing and who isn't. If you need another set of flashcards, let me know.
3.2 - This week students are continuing to measure area by counting unit squares. They are also using addition and multiplication to calculate area. Keep practicing addition, subtraction, and multiplication facts!
READING:
We are continuing our narrative unit which focuses on three aspects of reading: fluency, literary language, and tracking longer stories. This week students are practicing reading at a just-right pace. For many students this means picking up the pace, and doing so in ways that improve comprehension. We are also learning to recognize literary language and understand comparisons within texts to uncover special things the authors what use to see and feel.
WRITING:
We are also continuing our fun unit on poetry! Our students have already crafted several poems as they experiment with line breaks and details to write about topics that are special to them. This week we will use precise words to create an image with our words. We will also discover how poets repeat words, sounds, and lines to give their poems music and emphasize special meanings.
SOCIAL STUDIES:
This week we are continuing to explore how and why James Oglethorpe began the colony known as Georgia. We are recognizing the importance of the relationship between Oglethorpe and Tomochichi, and how Mary Musgrove helped them communicate. This week we will begin working on our projects to showcase what we've learned in this unit!
