"HESnapshot" - Featured staff of the week at HES... will continue in January, 2017!
"Music Counts Every Day" at HES - The first week in January will feature The Holberg Suite written by Edward Grieg.
The Holberg Suite, is a suite or collection of five sections of music written byEdward Grieg in 1884 to celebrate the 200th anniversary of the birth of playwright Ludwig Holberg.
It is music which makes use of musical styles and forms from the eighteenth century.
The Holberg Suite was originally composed for the piano, but a year later was adapted by Grieg himself for string orchestra. The suite consists of an introduction and a set of dances. It is an early essay in neo-classicism, an attempt to echo as much as was known in Grieg's time of the music of Holberg's era.
This week we will be listening to the first movement, the Prelude. It is a bright and cheerful piece of music that reminds me of the bright crisp January mornings.
The question this week is:
Which country did Grieg and Holberg come from?
Answers on a piece of paper to Mr. Roberts in the music room by Friday morning.
Happy Holidays!
