Writing Workshop
Since we have completed our handwriting books, we will officially kickoff cursive writing. Cursive lowercase letters that are very similar to their print counterparts will be introduced first. The students will be introduced to and practice the cursive c, a, d, g, and h. The will practice writing words with these letters to get used to attaching the letters in words and only leaving spacing between words. It promises to be very fun!
The students will continue writing their informational texts over the next few weeks. Their table of contents have been established and each day or two, they will focus on specific section. As they write, they are expected and will be reminded to incorporate mini-lessons from throughout the year.
We will be take a short break from our informational writing to work on a special piece for all of the wonderful 2R dads.
Math
Earlier in the year, the students learned how to multiplication solve the facts of 2, 5, and 10 by skip counting and using dot paper. Pictures and fingers were used to illustrate the skip counting strategy while dot paper arrays were used to represent the group and item strategy. In addition, they were introduced to the inverse relationship between multiplication and division. In Chapter 15, the students will be taught the multiplication facts of 3 and 4 using the the same strategies.
Next week, the students will be begin completing the end of year Math test. It is long, so it will be broken into sections and they will be taking over a few days. We will continue with lessons after sections are taken.

Social Studies
We are beginning Social Studies Unit 5, Past and Present. The students will begin by listening to the story Growing Seasons and learn about a family that lived 100 years ago. They will then look at various pictures of trees and describe what time of year they are from. As a class, we will identify early uses of calendars and clocks as ways to measure time. We will try to order events by using the terms "ancient times" and "modern times." Using a time line, we will trace the history of space exploration, The students will also consider how people learn about the past.
The students will be introduced to the word "History." The will learn to recognize various sources of information that historians use; People, Places and Artifacts. We will use Ft. Myers, Florida as an example to help understand how communities changes. Inventions and technology help change how a community works.
We will also revisit two reading strategies and see how relate to history; prediction and cause and effect. By using details from the past, people can predict what may happen when certain events repeat themselves. In addition, knowing what causes something to happen can help people decide what to do today and help them make plans for the future.
Social Expectations
The students will practice using a self-regulation scale by adjusting the meter based on a book character's thoughts, words, and actions. Judith Viorst "Alexander" books lend themselves to many of aspects of social expectations. As the students listen to Alexender, Who Used to Be Rich Last Sunday, they will adjust his self-regulation scale. We will discuss what he does to help himself when things do not go his way. They will be able to connect to him and learn how to better manage their feelings. The class will come full circle and connect the problem solving strategies to self-regulation.
