What is AVID?
AVID brings researchâbased strategies and curriculum to educational institutions in elementary, middle school, and high school. AVID is delivered through the AVID elective class.
- Teaches skills and behaviors for academic success
- Provides intensive support with tutorials and strong student/teacher relationships
- Creates a positive peer group for students
- Develops a sense of hope for personal achievement gained through hard work and determination
As a result, policymakers and educators now consider AVID's mission to be an essential strategy for closing the achievement gap, making college access and success available to all students.
MHS will start its first AVID class with 9th grade students 2nd semester.
Who is the AVID student?
- Student who achieves B's and C's
- 1st in the family to go to college
- Comes from a group that is traditionally underrepresented in higher education
- Desire to go to college
- Will work hard
- Willing to take rigorous course work
Testimonial on the Power of AVID
Agua Fria High School has fully implemented the AVID program. 2017 saw the first AVID graduating class. Each of these graduating Seniors is college bound to a four year university and earned a scholarship. Students gave testimonials at a May Governing Board meeting, that without AVID they wouldn't have these same opportunities.
