Arrival/Pick-Up Procedures
Student Drop-off and Pick-up procedures for students who will be dropped off/picked up in Westbrook Parking Lots
Westbrook does not have any supervision for students before 8:10am. Please do not drop off students until 8:10am.
Students in grades K-3 will drop off/pick up in the East Parking Lot by the Main Entrance.
Students in grade 4-6 will drop off/pick up in the South Parking Lot by the Boys and Girls Club.
If families have siblings in grades K-3 and 4-6, please drop off with the K-3 students.
In both parking lots, please follow the following traffic pattern (images below):
There are two lanes of traffic: curb lane and left lane.
Use the curb lane to stop and drop-off/pick-up students. We encourage you to have your student sit on the right side of the vehicle to make for safe enter and exit of the vehicle.
The left lane is for through traffic only. No stopping allowed in the left lane. (See images below)
Please stay in your vehicle if you are in the drop-off/pickup lane.Teachers will assist your student into the vehicle. If you would like to get out of your vehicle to get your student in or out of the car, please park in a parking stall.
For Students That Walk to School
Students who are walking to school or being dropped off in the neighborhood can go to either entrance but we encourage Grades K-3 to go to the Main Entrance and Grades 4-6 go to the South Entrance (Boys and Girls Club). Once students have reached the sidewalk by an entrance, they will be expected to remain at that entrance.
Entering the Building
Students will be allowed to enter Westbrook at 8:20am and can pick up a breakfast to take to their classroom. School begins at 8:30am. It is critical that students are to school before 8:30am. Students will have until 8:45am to eat their breakfast.

Annual AHERA Notice
The Asbestos Hazard Emergency Response Act of 1986 (AHERA) requires each public school district to annually notify parents, staff, and employee groups of its asbestos management plans. A management plan is in place for Westbrook Elementary and is available for review either at the school building or at the Westside Service Center, 9437 J St. Omaha, NE.
This school building was originally inspected in the1980’s and re-inspected by a certified inspector every three years thereafter. The three-year re-inspection and a ceiling tile inspection was conducted in 2019, and periodic surveillance will be conducted as required. No abatement activities are currently in progress or scheduled for the 2021-2022 school year at this building.
The Designated Person responsible for managing the District’s AHERA compliance and the contact person for questions or to review a management plan is the Director of Facilities, Russ Olsen (402) 390-8331.
MTSS for Westside Community Schools
Westside Community Schools continues the implementation of MTSS, which stands for Multi-Tiered System of Supports. MTSS in Westside assures that we regularly monitor student skills and follow-up with providing students what they need to be successful in learning. Beginning in August and September this means that we first screen all students to determine their current skill levels and plan our instruction to meet their needs.
What is MTSS? MTSS is a framework for providing instruction and support to promote the academic and behavioral success of all children. Individual children’s progress & skills are measured, and these results are used to make decisions about further instruction and intervention. The MTSS process is flexible and allows for a continuum of supports designed to meet the needs of individual students. This support may be provided in a large or small group by the classroom teacher or other support staff, either within or outside the classroom.
What does this mean for my child? A key component of the MTSS process is that all children receive high quality instruction in their classroom. Universal screenings are brief tests used to measure the progress of all students and are given three times per year. As a result of the screenings, students may be identified as needing some degree of supplemental intervention in addition to the instruction they are receiving in their classroom. If your child is identified as needing intervention you will be notified. Please contact your child’s building principal with questions.
Nebraska Reading Improvement Act: The Nebraska Reading Improvement Act went into effect at the start of the 2019-2020 school year. The goal is that all Nebraska students are able to read at or above grade level by the end of third grade. This is accomplished by ensuring all students have access to high-quality instruction and for struggling readers to receive targeted support (intervention). Our current MTSS framework in Westside Community Schools already allows for us to meet these state requirements. Also, the more students continue to read, review math facts, and write/journal each day at home, in addition to their instruction from school, the more secure their skills may become.
