1A Classroom Update 11
April 8, 2016
Hello Spring!
Hello Spring!
Welcome Spring! Our 1A friends have entered the new term with open arms. We know it has been a while since you have seen a class update due to the holidays and conferences. Please read through our update and take a look at what our 1A friends have been up to these past couple of weeks!
Academics
Reading
In reading, our 1A friends have begun to explore the world of genres, particularly fairy tales. We took some time identifying similarities and differences between genres (e.g. fiction vs. nonfiction) and will now delve into exploring fairytales. Our readers worked with partners to look for particular features we can find in a fairytale. In order to enhance our 1A friends knowledge have them read more fairy tales and make a list of specific features they come across.
Writing
Our friends have been introduced to King How’s Niece! Her name is Olivia Opinion! Olivia is full of opinions and loves to listen to others that may feel very different about different topics! As we have started our Opinion Writing Unit, our friends have been sharing their thoughts and views on different subjects. We kicked off the unit playing games such as Would You Rather? And Toe the Line. Would You Rather is a game full of questions that also need strong support to back up your answers! Some of the questions included Would You Rather swim a pool of snakes or a pool of spiders! Toe the Line is another game Olivia Opinion introduced. Here our 1A friends are placed around the rug and use their toes to answer a given question!
Math
Our 1A mathematicians have continued to be hard at work this past term. We have continued our work on place value and breaking down 2-digit numbers into groups of tens and ones. We have also began an in depth discussion of part-part-whole word problems. An example would be Mr. Padilla had 10 brown dogs. Ms. Garcia had some white dogs. They had 20 dogs in all. How many white dogs did Ms. Garcia have? We have also begun to apply our place value thinking to our part-part-whole problems, using Base-Ten formation to solve. In number stories, we have been continuing our work on problems with multiple integers. Our next step in Term 3 is to begin our focus on regrouping when using addition and subtraction. We are so excited to watch our 1A scholars take on this new challenge.
Inquiry
We have wrapped up our unit that covered the 3 changing states of matter, and moved on to Traditions and Celebrations around the world. So far we have introduced our inquirers to the ideas that there are different celebrations that happen all around the world, and just because we may celebrate something with our family and friends, this may not be the case with everyone we know. We also touched on the fact that there are many different reasons we celebrate, and although they are different in every household, they are all beliefs that we hold special in our hearts. We have briefly touched on specific holidays and reasons they are celebrated. Our next step is to go more in depth into each individual celebration and find out the different aspects and reasons for celebrating. We are very excited to have families participate in this unit. Our inquiry unit will explore how celebrations are expressions of shared beliefs and values. We would appreciate if you could fill out this First Grade Family Celebrations survey to help us make connections to our students’ home lives.

DANCE
BPCS hosted our first in-school dance performance! Modern dance company, Jennifer Muller/The Works presented excerpts of their repertory and students LOVED it! First graders shined through, dancing and clapping along and asking very thoughtful question about the mood and meaning of the choreography. Please see an excerpt here.
Lets eat en Español!
1A loves to celebrate food en Español! We get to create our own Menú de Restaurante (some food are too expensive in our pretend restaurant). We enjoy pretending to play server and clients. Some clients LOVE to pretend food is super picante and love to demand agua!!!! We work using Total Physical Response to learn our new vocabulary words: plato, vaso, tenedor, cuchillo, cuchara. Please continue to practice Spanish at home and play Menú de Restaurante - its so much fun!!!
Muchas gracias,
