Trisha Brown
Modern Choreographer and Dancer
A Little About Brown
Trisha was born November 25th, 1936 - now, about to be 77 years old. In 1958, she graduated from Mills College in Oakland, CA with a bachelors degree in the arts. A few years later, in 1961 Brown moved to New York and trained with Anna Halprin then became one of the founders of the avant-garde Judson Dance Theater a year later. This began her journey of learning and creating her own style and creativity. In the late 1960s, began to "defy gravity", creating pieces incorporating harnesses and ropes attached to the dancers to allow them to walk up or down the walls. This became one of the most unique things about her choreography.
In 1970, she co-founded the Grand Union and formed her own company, the Trisha Brown Dance Company featured in the middle picture below. This company soon became one of the lead contemporary dance ensembles. This company still competes and performs today under the instruction of Diane Madden.
