Marching Storm Update
May 22, 2016; Edition 1
Welcome!
I will try to send updates about once a week so that the needs for the next week appear in your email box prior to the deadlines or needs for action. At the bottom of this newsletter is an opportunity to communicate back to me. You can use that, or simply send me an email (email works best!).
Thanks again for joining the Marching Storm! I am looking forward to an amazing season!
Details this week
During this part of our season, we organize our time by colorguard students working skills under the leadership of our colorguard instructors; drumline students working skills under the leadership of our drumline instructors; honor guard students working skills under the leadership of our honor guard instructors and wind section students working skills with Mr. Campbell and/or our drill instructor.
Our big events coming up that students and parents need to be award of are:
- Parent Preview
- Picture Day
- Memorial Day
- Sweat Camp
Calendar and Schedule
Saturday, May 28
The time after our noon break will be focused on students dressing into uniform, marching around the parking lot at the high school and then performing their music in concert arcs. Then, students will learn about putting their uniforms away, hanging them up and general care items when using their uniform.
The communication that needs to happen is that band students, drumline and honor guard students need to have black socks, their white gloves, their shorts that they wear under their uniform and their compression shirt under their uniform at this practice.
Accessories
Compression Shirts
In sharing the following information, we are not trying to be crude or overly descriptive; but we have learned that for our men wearing compression shirts, the shirts can be abrasive on the nipple area. Covering them with a bandaid is a simple solution. This isn't an issue for our women because they wear a bra under the shirt. It is recommended that the women wear a sports bra under their compression shirt should we not have an appropriate changing area following our parades. We have reviewed this practice with our Activities Department and we are consistent with the sporting teams habits.
Picture Day
Pictures will begin with a large group photo at 5:00 pm. After the group photo, they will begin the individual and buddy photo shots. When you are finished with your pictures, you may leave after you put your uniform away in the cabinets and equipment away.
Should you have any questions about pictures, please communicate directly with Jen Thompson. Phone: 320-260-9057; email: jen@jenthompsonphoto.com.
Mystery Tour update
At this stage, we can share that we have extended the trip by a day and a half beyond our original communication. We plan to leave on July 1 and then get back very late on July 6 (midnight).
We have attempted to communicate with every student who is going and we requested that they notify us if there was anything that preventing them from the additional days on the trip. One student came forward and we are working with that family to help them with their plans and our extended date.
Should you have been missed, and you have a conflict, please communicate with Mr. Campbell as soon as possible! Thanks.
FINAL PAYMENT information is that we know the cost will be LESS than we originally had communicated. It is our hope that we have an exact final cost for our trip sometime shortly after Memorial Day. We will also communicate our final payment due date at that time.
Mandatory Chaperone Training
Our first session is on Saturday, May 28 from 2:00-4:00 pm. This session helps you understand our trailer and the equipment that goes into it. This two-part session instructs our drivers how to properly connect the trailer to the tow vehicle and then how to load and unload the carts on the trailer.
Our second session is on Sunday, June 5th from 3:00-4:30.

Hydration and food
Food is the energy that your body needs when you give it a workout. Marching in the summer while you are performing gives your body an olympic calibre workout!! Make sure you eat balanced meals that include fruit, vegetables, grains, protein and dairy. Snack bars or pop tarts do not give your body the fuel that it needs. Make sure that you visit with your parents about the food choices you have during the next month of our season.

Reminders are as follows for students:
Changing will take place in the rooms in the music suite. Have your shorts and T- shirt on so changing can be done quickly. Remember black socks, bug spray, black marching shoes, white gloves, shorts and t-shirt under uniform, music, page protectors, and masking tape.
Food suggestions:
Student need to realize that we will be performing over the noon hour and students will be in uniform from 7:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. The day is a stressful day and many students will want to have a snack on the bus. We have a rule were students can’t eat in uniform. They can only drink water. If parents consider sending a nutrition bar or granola bar to help tide them over, we would be willing to accept this while on the bus between performances. Please keep in mind that the food should not be able to stain the uniforms.
