What's New in the Library

March 2013

Welcome to the first instalment of library news. My goal is to provide a monthly library bulletin to provide you with information about upcoming library events, new resources, fun Web 2.0 tools, and any other interesting information.

Reading Link Challenge

After 5 months of reading great books and practicing questions, the school based Reading Link Challenge is fast approaching. A group of dedicated grade 4 & 5 students have been working hard to read at least 2 books from this year's selections and become 'experts' on these books. We will be having the school level challenge on Monday, March 11th where the winning team will be selected to represent Cougar Canyon at the North Delta Challenge in April.

This year's books are:

Stay tuned for the results of the school challenge!

Cool web tools

Each month, I hope to highlight useful web tools that you can use in your teaching practice. I have discovered so many of these great tools through my UBC classes, Twitter, or friends and I am excited to share them with you. Although I may not be an expert in using these tools, I am happy to work with you to get you started.

Smore newletters

Looking for a new way to communicate with families? Check out smore.com for fun and free newsletter templates. This library bulletin is my first attempt at using smore and I love how easy it is to navigate. Give it a try!

Animoto

Animoto is a great site for creating videos and slideshows. It can be used to create slideshows for lessons or to highlight photos from field trips or special events. You can sign up for an education account to get a free upgrade from the basic account.

Coming soon ...

That's all for this month.

April will see the return of the Scholastic Book Fair to Cougar and it will coincide with our school-wide Reading Day Event. More details to come.

In next month's newsletter, I'll highlight some of our new fiction and non-fiction books and some useful websites for good quality lesson plans.
