SISD Library Volunteers of the Month

Mr. Adalberto Ramos, Jensen librarian said, “I would like to recognize these amazing library volunteers. The students have helped me at the library, at one time or another, this year. “ The students are Hiram Rios, Victor Vazquez, Jorge Collazo, Joshua Garcia, Iliana Vasquez, Martha Ortega, Jordan Collazo, Castulo Perez, Daniel Salinas, Nick Guevara, and Joey Colon.

“They have been a great help to our Jensen Library in having it organized and ready for the following day. These amazing kids have spent many after school hours helping me organize the library, putting different labels on the books, and just helping out with any tasks. They did an incredible job!”

Librarians Celebrate @ Longhorn Steakhouse

Nicole Cruz was surprised on Wednesday, April 29th. The district librarians planned a wonderful dinner out. The librarians surprised her with dinner, flowers, and a gift card to Dillards. "I never expected it. It is an honor and a privilege to work alongside this dedicated group of professionals." Nicole stated. "This night is definitely "One for the Record Books."

Obama Speaks Through Distance Learning @ Shimotsu Elementary

President Obama spoke to 4th graders at Shimotsu Elementary on April 30th. While the President was not present physically, he brought a message titled, "A Conversation with the President" to students and staff at the library.

Pioneer High School Hosts Turnitin.com Webinar

PHS Librarian Janie Flores organized and is advertising a Turnitin Webinar slated for Tuesday, June 9th at 10 am for any Pioneer High School faculty member. One of the most widely distributed educational applications in the world, Turnitin and Ephorus is used by more than 15,000 institutions in 140 countries to manage the submission, tracking and evaluation of student papers online.

Librarians Wear Many Hats But Not Necessarily Costumes

Luckily, Mrs. Cruz didn't have to wear a Lion's costume for the Student Activity Fair that was part of the SHS Freshmen Orientation. LEO the Lion greeted incoming BL Gray students and teachers on Thursday, May 21st. Mrs. Cruz, SHS librarian, assisted with organizing the event. Introductory meetings were held with administrative team members Lorene Bazan, CTE Department Head Mary Jo Brisnahan, and Athletic Coordinator Ron Adame. A student training was held on Monday, May 18th at the library lecture hall.

SNJH Wins District UIL Meet

Congratulations to Sharyland North Junior High for placing 1st in District UIL! This is the first time in the school's 10 years to win the District Title. They won by 2 points over Mission Junior High School. Darvin Koenig, SNJH Librarian, coaches UIL Spelling and UIL Listening Skills.

Summer Pet Safety

Veronica Cantu, a 1st grade Shimotsu teacher, arranged to have Samara Cokinos, Channel 5 Meteorologist speak to students about summer pet care. Her information focused on how pets can be sheltered and cared for during different types of weather. Students should always make sure their furry friends basic needs are met especially during the hot summer months.

Mrs. Sally Hartman treats her readers like celebrities every reporting period. She displays top readers through a bulletin board located in the main hallway! Way to Go READERS!

No Food or Drink Please or Maybe Just this Once

Normally, food and drink are not allowed at the David Garcia Memorial Library, but PHS Librarian Janie Flores made an exception this time. Her PHS Book Club met for the last time to celebrate the end of a successful year. Club members enjoyed junk food, good conversation, and book recommendations for summer "fun" reading!

Final Hurray for SHS Book Club

The new SHS Book Club Officers said goodbye to the graduating members with a little celebratory snack and pizza meeting on Monday, June 1st. Club President Jared Heiden had these wise words to share with incoming President Eduardo Diaz, "Always put Book Club first and sign up to be a library student aide!" Joking aside members had a great final meeting.

Mrs. Bewley smiles next to a brand new addition to her library. The Harry Shimotsu library opened in 2007. After 8 years as the school librarian, Mrs. Bewley has filled the shelves. She is happy to have new shelving so she can order more books!

Martinez 6th Graders Hear KICK Message

Ms. Zulema Garza invited the KICK "Keep It Clean and Kind" Ambassadors to RD Martinez Elementary. The students had a very interactive presentation on the importance of keeping virtual information appropriate. Students won t-shirts, bumper stickers, and bookmarks.

Poetry Night Draws Standing Room Only Audience

Mrs. Bewley was very pleased with the community support that this year's event yielded.

"We had over 100 adults and many, many children." Poetry is shared throughout the year, but one of the culminating events is a night full of games and poetry recitations.

Congratulations Graduate!

Sherilyn Pope Dittman received her Master of Arts in Christian Education from Union Presbyterian Seminary on Saturday, May 30th. Mrs. Dittman was the library substitute at O Garza Elementary for four months this spring. We wish her all the best in her future endeavors.

Students Help Teachers Win by Returning Library Books

All library books were due on Friday, May 22nd. District librarians used many methods to advertise and encourage students to return their books and pay their overdue fines. One method used at Sharyland High School included offering incentives to teachers for distributing library notices. Ms. Aldape's HST student displays a prize her teacher won...a portable cell phone charger...perfect for trips to the beach!

PR Branding Iron Award Recipient: Nicole H. Cruz, SISD Lead Librarian

Nicole Cruz received a the PR Branding Iron Award for her speech "Why School Libraries are Important" which was published in the spring edition of the Texas Library Journal. She delivered this speech at the Pioneer High School Library Dedication Ceremony in October.

Mrs. Cruz was honored to receive board recognition for this accomplishment. Pictured with her are SHS Principal Carolyn Mendiola and SISD Board President Dr. Noel Garza.
