This week is Deaf Awareness Week!

September 21st - 27th, 2014

How do deaf people communicate with their hearing loss?

Most deaf people use American Sign Language (ASL) to communicate. Some can lip read.

How do deaf people talk on the phone? How do they hear it ring?

Deaf people are given video phones so they can sign to each other. Face time and texting is also popular among the deaf community. When a home phone is ringing, the lights in the house will flash. The same goes for doorbells, fire alarms, etc.

Can deaf people play sports?

Yes! If they play on a team with hearing people, they will usually notice when everyone stops, that the whistle blew. But there are national deaf teams for Basketball, Football, Volleyball, and many more.

Can deaf people hear anything?

Most deaf people can hear some things. Loud noises like drums, horns, instruments, will catch some deaf peoples attention.
