Intentional Intervention
Where to start with your struggling learner
When a child is struggling to read, behave a certain way, or has difficulty mastering math concepts, we often think we have to change what our child is doing to see improvements. But really, the first change starts with you as the parent and educator. An intervention is changing what we do or how we teach something to meet our child's needs.
How do I know if my child is struggling?
One way to know if a child needs intervention, is to use a tool to determine how they are doing compared to same grade or age peers. In MSBSD, we utilize two main assessments to help us determine this:
- In K-3, we use the Aimsweb benchmarking system
- In 4-12, we use the MAP benchmark
These assessments are usually offered in the Fall and Spring and for some students, they may also participate in the Winter window.
Our fall window for these assessments have closed, but we can use both MAP and Aimsweb all year long with their progress monitoring tools. If you think your child may be behind, contact your advisor today to schedule a time to take one of these assessments and get more information about where they are currently and what you can be working on next.
- If your child participated in Aimsweb or MAP in the August testing window and you haven't received your scores, send an email to your advisor to get a copy.
