Town of Sunnyvale - Dec. 10, 2021

Message from the Town Manager

Dear Citizens of Sunnyvale,

I know many of you have questions regarding the recent letter that the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (TCEQ) required the Town of Sunnyvale to send out related to our lead/copper readings from our water samples. There is always a concern when we receive an “official” letter from a government agency. The letter is important so I do not want to minimize it, however I would like to make a few comments that may help explain that letter.

  • The Town of Sunnyvale is required to submit samples from our water distribution system each year.
  • The notice was prompted because four of the twenty samples we submitted were over the action level set by TCEQ.
  • Their established action level is .015 milligrams per liter of water; 16 of our readings were lower than this level. The four that were over this level measured .023 milligrams per liter of water, or .008 over the action level. As a result of these four readings, the Town was required to notify our citizens of the overage.
  • TCEQ has made it clear that this is not a violation, nor is there any penalty to the Town because of these numbers.
  • In a letter to the Town of Sunnyvale, received on Dec. 9 from TCEQ, the Town was told that the requirements for 2021 have been completed. This means they have acknowledged and TCEQ has approved our plan for mediation.
  • Our plan for 2022 is as follows:
    • Jan. 1 – March 31, 2022: we will collect three samples within our distribution system and submit for testing.
    • April 1 – June 30, 2022: we will collect three samples within our distribution system and submit for testing.
    • If the samples are good (below the action level) after the second set of samples have been submitted, our testing will cease.

I know this is not the type of letter you want to receive two weeks before Christmas, but please know we are available to explain each of these items to you if you have further questions or concerns.

Littering

There has been an increased amount of litter in the Town and our Parks department has spent many hours picking up trash in the past week.

Did you know that littering (< five lbs) is a Class C misdemeanor (Texas Health & Safety Code §365.012) punishable by a fine of up to $500?

In an effort to deter littering, there are two ways you can help:

1). If you observe someone littering, please take down their license plate number, make and color of vehicle, date and time, location, who tossed the litter (driver/passenger), what was tossed, etc. and report it to the Sunnyvale Police Department, so that appropriate action can be taken.

OR

2.) If you observe someone littering, visit http://www.dontmesswithtexas.org/get.../report-a-litterer/

TxDOT compares the information through the Department of Motor Vehicles' registration database, and when an exact match is located, they send the litterer a Don’t Mess With Texas litterbag along with a letter reminding them to keep their trash off Texas roads. Please help us keep Sunnyvale beautiful!

Reminder: upcoming closure on Tripp Road

The construction on Tripp Road for the culvert replacement will begin on Dec. 18. The construction was originally scheduled to begin on Dec. 1, but was delayed. The message boards on Tripp Road have been updated to reflect the delay.

Please plan an alternate route. Detour signage will be put in place. The road will be closed entirely, just west of the Town Center Park entrance.

Town Center Park will remain open, however the only way to access the park will be from the Collins Road side.

Tripp Road is expected to be closed for approximately four months.

If you have any questions, please email Town Engineer Lyle Jenkins - lyle.jenkins@townofsunnyvale.org.
