They usually support general issues such as a free-market economy with little government force, limited federal spending, and low taxes. They oppose abortion rights and same-sex marriage. The Republican Party formed 1834 in Ripon, Wisconsin by former members of the Whig Party to oppose slavery and the "oppression" of Andrew Jackson, they rapidly gained followers in the North. Also, their first presidential candidate, John C. Fremont, won 11 of the 16 Northern States in 1865.
