A Word from the Director...

Hello HCC Families,

I would like to take a moment to thank each and everyone of you for your support and attendance at our very first Parent-Teacher Conferences! Our teachers ended the week feeling energized and blessed to have such amazing students and families at our school!

At HCC we love to give gratitude and this month we'd like to thank:

  • Jeremy Lacaria from State Farm Insurance for donating a new refrigerator to our staff break room
  • All of our Parking Lot Heroes, Lunch Heroes and Trail Heroes for donating their time to help ensure the safety of our students
  • Tyson Schroeder for plowing our snowy parking lot
  • Joshua Dahlstrom, Josh Fletcher, and Vern Newby for removing dead trees, cutting tree trunks, moving them, and placing them in our playground area
  • Our teachers for putting in extra hours to prepare for conferences
  • Esther Shankland for working an entire weekend to perform COVID-19 Tracing
  • Our Parent Crew for stocking our staff break room with snacks for our long conference days
  • Our students for coming in the door each day with big smiles and an enthusiasm for learning
  • Our parents for making drop-off and pick-up a much easier process

Acts of kindness such as these are what makes our school such a positive, enriching place to learn and work!

A Look at Gardening

Our Gardening Exploratory students have been working hard to prepare our school for fall and spring planting. In order to ensure our ground has optimal growing conditions, this month the students have been learning to test the pH of the soil and water around HCC’s school grounds. Not only are they discovering which plants can be planted according to their soil sample results, how to read multiple types of soil pH test kits, and learning how to change the pH levels of their samples, they will also be exploring the wonderful world of microorganisms that live in our soil, through the lens of a microscope.

Students are working to figure out the mass, volume and density of a pumpkin during this lab. By using math and science skills in their gardening class, this gives our students a feel for what practical application looks like in the world outside of a standard classroom setting. This is also a great way for the teacher to reiterate concepts they have learned and for the students to practice using such concepts.

Science Meets Music

Have you ever played a pumpkin? Last week, thanks to Mr. Swofford and Mr. Hampsch, all of our students were able to experience making a human circuit using Makey Makey circuit boards, wires, and pumpkins to create a music lab. The result was total engagement of our students while learning about electrical currents in a fun interactive learning experience. The music wasn't too bad either!
Big picture

We Salute our HCC Staff Veteran's, Kelley Esseltine and Paul Swofford. Thank you for your service!

Celebration of Learning

At the end of each of our EL Learning Modules we have scheduled Celebrations of Learning to showcase our students' culminating projects and to recognize students displaying the 3 Domains of Achievement: Core Conceptional Understanding of Skills, Scholarly Habits of Mind and Character Development, and High Quality Work. Due to COVID restrictions, we are not able to hold our first celebration in person; however, we will be video-taping your child presenting their project and will attach a QR code to their final project allowing you to scan and view the video. Awards will be sent home in manilla envelopes with award recipients. These projects will be sent home on Dec. 3. First Quarter Progress Reports will also be emailed on Dec. 7 and awards will be sent home on this day(please note the dates have been adjusted to reflect our delayed opening).
