Andrew Jackson
Andrew Jackson played a big part in the Battle of Orleans. He defended the city. He was known as 'Old Hickory' during this battle.

Should he be praised or criticized?
I think it is half and half. Andrew Jackson did more good things than bad, but I think the removing of Indians was a bad idea. I can see how people could praise him and how people could criticize him.

I believe Andrew Jackson is a hero
I think Andrew Jackson is a hero for many reasons. One reason is because he was very important in 2 wars and the Battle of New Orleans. He helped the american's win. Jackson also created the "Spoils System" this was giving jobs to people who supported Jackson during the elections. The spoils system promoted democracy because it gave Jackson more supporters. Another thing that Jackson did that promoted democracy was not establishing a national bank. This would have made the rich richer. The common people would have hated the idea. One thing Andrew Jackson did that did not promote democracy was the removal of Cherokees. They had to go on a long journey across the country called "The Trail of Tears" many Cherokees suffered and died. But at the same time I believe he did promote democracy because by removing them Jackson had more land in the east, so that meant they could build and open more jobs and manufactures. I also don't think raising tariffes promoted democracy because it upset the southerns by making them pay a higher price for goods.
