Mustang Message
J.J. Pearce High School
October 19
I don't know about you, but I think I am good with the rain for a while. I would like to thank all the parents who braved the weather on Tuesday and showed up to our Mustang Breakfast sponsored by PEEF.
If you weren't aware, a few times throughout the year, PEEF hosts a breakfast in our library where you have the opportunity to sit down with me, the principal, to see what all we have going on at Pearce and to ask questions you may have. The next meeting is January 15th.
We always have a lot to celebrate at Pearce and below are just a few things.
Early Release October 24
Early release days were added to RISD’s student academic calendar this year. Students will be released two hours early on Sept. 19, October 24, January 30 and April 3. After-school programs, bus schedules and other portions of the daily schedule will be adjusted by two hours on those days.
Students will be released at 2:10.
The days were added as a direct result of requests from RISD teachers through surveys and interviews, and will provide teachers with more dedicated time for instructional planning with their collaborative teams - known in RISD as Professional Learning Communities (or PLCs). Teachers will be able to use the time to work with colleagues in either their grade level or subject area to plan lessons, discuss individual student performance, share ideas and best practices, and adjust teaching approaches with individual students as needed.
PACESETTER BAZAAR - October 27th & 28th

FORTE Show
NHS
JJ Pearce National Honor Society is now accepting applications for prospective members. If students are interested in becoming part of the National Honor Society inductee class of 2018 – 2019, please complete the application (link to document below) and turn it in to Mr. Barton in D107 by November 1st, 2018.
This year we did not send out individual invitations due to the number of students eligible and wanting to ensure that no students felt that they were excluded due to a clerical error. With that in mind we have opened applications to all students at JJ Pearce as long as they meet the GPA requirement. It is strongly suggested that before students begin the process of applying for NHS, they print out the first page of the application and have their counselor sign to verify their eligibility for NHS. Students must have a cumulative GPA of 90 or above in order qualify.
No student who has been previously accepted to National Honor Society needs to apply again. Students who have been accepted previously simply need to ensure they are logging volunteer hours in x2VOL and checking the National Honor Society Google Classroom for announcements and volunteer opportunities.
If you have any questions regarding the application process or any NHS related questions please do not hesitate to contact Caleb Barton by email at caleb.barton@risd.org.
Application – Please type information & bring printed copy to Mr. Barton in D107.

Communication

PEEF - Pearce Excellence in Education Foundation
If you are looking for a way to help Pearce, please considering donating to PEEF. Each year they help us provide much-needed resources to our teachers. Last year they were instrumental in providing resources to allow us to prepare for 1:1 technology and paid for subs so we could send 25 teachers to other campuses who have successfully implemented 1:1 technology. This was incredibly valuable for our teachers, and we are way ahead of the curve in being prepared for our students to utilize their Chromebooks. This year, they provided the resources needed to have 13 of our teachers trained in AVID strategies. In addition to helping our teachers, they also hosted several parent meetings throughout the year focusing on helping our parents prepare for their students going to college.
Pearce PTA
Our PTA is the best I have ever had at my school. They not only spend countless hours at our campus helping with everything, they also provide much needed resources to support our teachers. Last year, they replaced all of the furniture in our teachers’ lounge, provided our teachers lunch throughout the year, and made sure our teachers were appreciated all year long. I encourage you to join our PTA and give them your support.

Focus
Each week during our advisory time, we will have students check their own grades and attendance.
College Bound
Career and College Readiness
Our goal at Pearce is to help our students prepare for life after high school. Getting into college is a very complicated process, and we are here to help. If you have any questions, please contact Mrs. Kathy Noland at Kathy.Noland@risd.org or 469-593-5181.
Naviance
Have you heard about Naviance Family Connection but aren’t exactly sure what it is? Naviance is a comprehensive on-line college and career readiness program that students, families, counselors, and teachers can use together to provide students with college planning and career assessment tools. The counseling staff works with each grade level on specific tasks which are designed to help students develop their post-secondary plans. In addition to assigned tasks, students can use their Naviance Family Connection account to research colleges, explore careers and majors, search for scholarships, access GPA and rank, take a variety of assessments, and log their community service hours. As seniors, students will track their college applications, transcript and recommendation requests.
Each student is assigned a Naviance Family Connection account. Many parents choose to log in through their child’s account. However, you can create your own account by using a registration code provided by your child’s counselor or College & Career Coordinator. If you would like to create a parent account, please email your child’s counselor or Kathy Noland, PHS College & Career Coordinator at kathy.noland@risd.org and we will send your registration code and instructions home with your student.
We look forward to sharing how Naviance Family Connection can help you and your child explore the incredible college and career opportunities available to them so they can make informed decisions about their future.
