Sustaining Soil Resources

The Soil Protection Program
Why Should You Care?
Soil is always present when a plant is born. Trees are the main reason we breathe since they take away CO2 and give us oxygen. So basically if there wasn't soil, none of us would even be alive. One reason that mekes soil so very precious and important is that nothing on planet Earth can replace it. Humans use soil as a holding facility for solid waste. Also as a filter for wastewater, and foundation for our cities and towns. Soil is the basis of Canada's agroecosystems which provides us with food. The problem we are facing today is that since we are constantly building over land, it is covering up our soil. It is killing many different organisms. One tablespoon of soil contains more organisms than humans on earth. Soil filters our water and also regulates the Earth's temperature. We are destroying lands enriched with healthy soil at a rapid rate. Scientists say by that in 50 years time, we will have a real soil crisis on our hands.
What They Do To Help
The Soil Protection Program helps to protect the soil by having designated places for them to 'nurture' soil and do research on it. They put in thousands of dollars for their soil research and are always finding out new things to help. One event that they host is an annual soil appreciation day to raise money for research where the people participate in planting trees and learn more about the beauty of soil.
