Crisman students watch science in action
Each grade level at Crisman Elementary spent time in the Innovative Learning Lab this week! The kindergarten classes learned how they can build three-dimensional shapes out of toothpicks and marshmallows. The rest of the school spent time learning about gravity and air resistance by making their own parachutes. They observed how the parachute slowed the object attached to it as it fell to the ground.
Central students make tasty treats in STEM project
Our students at Central Elementary School are loving their One School One Book, "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory." In fact, the book is so good that it inspired our ITS, Mrs. Guth, to teach students how to manufacture their own sweet treat this week!
Mrs. Guth led our students through a STEM lab that showed them how to make ice cream using a few ingredients and a little bit of science. The students put cream, sugar, and vanilla in one Ziplock bag, and ice and salt in the other. When the students put the first bag inside the second and shook it up, the result was perfectly chilled, delicious vanilla ice cream!
Thank you to Mrs. Guth for planning this fun One School One Book activity, and great job to our students on successfully completing this STEM activity in the Innovative Learning Lab!
PTS receives $50,000 NIPSCO rebate
Portage Township Schools has been awarded a $50,000 rebate from NIPSCO!
Last summer, our buildings and grounds department coordinated the replacement of the chillers at each of our buildings. The new units are energy efficient, promote healthy indoor air quality, and provide long-term cost savings. Our application to NIPSCO's Energy Efficiency Program awarded us $50,000 for installing this new equipment.
Thank you to our Buildings and Grounds Director, Mile Mavrovic, for coordinating this project and leading the NIPSCO Energy Efficiency Program application process. We would also like to thank the Lockheed Martin team, Mr. Kurt Kenning, and Mrs. Anna Fishbein for their contributions during the project and application process.
