The Lion's Share
November/December 2018
A Message from the Principal:
Yesterday we had our annual spelling bee in which we were represented by some very talented 3-6 grade spellers. On Saturday, Settler's Point sent students, staff, and parents to be featured in the annual Gilbert Days Parade. Moving forward we have field trips, holiday concerts, assemblies, and much more.
The month of December will be a critical one for the staff at Settler's Point. After meeting with several members of the district office, we are moving forward with an aggressive professional development plan for our teaching staff. We will have 3-6 grade teachers being trained in a reading program called "Act Now." This program is built around having teachers use rigorous text to teach students how to have meaningful, collaborative conversations that will inspire more critical thinking. Additionally, every grade level will have a day of professional development with our district's reading coach that focuses on unpacking College and Career Readiness standards, and how to provide more conceptual understanding of mathematical concepts. These trainings will mean that there will be some more substitutes on campus than normal, but we feel that these opportunities will lead to better instruction for all of our students.
From our Settler's Point family to yours, we hope you all have a wonderful Thanksgiving with your family and friends. We are thankful for you and all you do!

Potential Change to GPS boundaries....
However, with the way our SPE community boundaries are currently set up, we are one of the few school communities that have a portion of our students go to Mesquite Junior High, while another goes to South Valley Junior High. With the proposed changes our entire community would be zoned to go to Mesquite Junior High and then to Mesquite High.
There is a meeting for our community to discuss and get questions answered on December 10 at Mesquite Junior High. Time is currently TBD.
Dads' Club Ice Cream Night
From 3:30-9:00, SPE will receive 10% of the sales. This will be the same night as our annual band/strings concert, so it could be a great place to celebrate.
