Sipley School Parent Newsletter
October 18, 2018
The depth of the love of parents for their children cannot be measured. It is like no other relationship. It exceeds concern for life itself. The love of a parent for a child is continuous and transcends heartbreak and disappointment.

Student Attendance
Poor attendance has serious implications for later outcomes as well. High school dropouts have been found to exhibit a history of negative behaviors, including high levels of absenteeism throughout their childhood, at higher rates than high school graduates.3 These differences in absentee rates were observed as early as kindergarten, and students who eventually dropped out of high school missed significantly more days of school in first grade than their peers who graduated from high school." Please do all that you can to have your child at school each day.

The Action for Healthy Kids Grant in Partnership with Advocate Good Samaritan
Health and wellness is critical to the physical and emotional development of all of us. We are doing a variety of things to promote health! We invited specialist from Advocate Health Services to speak to our staff about stress in the workplace and gave us helpful tips to maintain our own health. As part of the grant we have The University of Illinois Extension coming out to talk to students in Kindergarten through grade 2 on the topic of nutrition through a Farm to Table learning experience. The tentative date for that is November 16. On November 15th the DuPage Health Department will be out to talk to Kindergarten through third grade about cleanliness via their Cleanliness Program. The DuPage Health Department will also be out on November 16th to meet with students in grades four through six on the topic of mental health and stress reduction. In addition these resources, Sipley continues to focus on the health of our children. Cross-fit equipment was purchased for Mr. Davis. An after school soccer program is now offered. No child misses recess at Sipley. Our staff started a walking club. Our STP is doing the Fun Run again. And we continue to teach Second Step in all grades, which is a Social Emotional Learning curriculum that helps students become better in not only school, but life! As Mr. Davis and Dr. Mrozik talk with folks from Action for Healthy Kids, they are in great support of what we are doing and they continually ask us what they can do for us and our students. It truly has been an awesome partnership with them and I wanted to take a moment to share this important work with all of you.
