Our very own, Paula Ann Trevino presented at the CTE Conference discussing, "Authentic Evaluations of CTE Programs," where she provided insight as a Adminstrator who is currently overseeing the CTE program at Helix.
Learning More about the Drug Development Process
Thanks to Biocom Institute, Mrs Trevino was able to attend a workshop at MEI Pharma to learn about the process to creating new medicines.
Scientists, Doctors, technology, and professional staff shared their journeys which have led them to the creation of new medicine. They shared a vision of creating safe medicines that are effective with the goal of helping patients.
While some might think the company is all science based, in truth it is a collaboration of IT, data science, medicine, lab, and a variety of other jobs that carry out the entire vision.

Visiting the Boz Institute
Tech for Bio Students got the opportunity to extracting DNA from E. coli on Saturday, 11/12 at the Boz Institute.
These students learned some basic lab skills for their upcoming metagenomics project.
Currently, 8 of our students are in their program that runs Nov. 2022 through April 2023.

Education Pathway Students visit CSUSM!
CSUSM has a leading teacher education program in San Diego County. Pathway students were able to meet with college administrators, teachers and students in the Education field and learned about different pathways within the School of Education and build connections.
Alexa Lawrence: Helix Alum and 1st year Teacher Featured in SDSU Story
Lawrence was a member of SDSU’s first graduating ITEP cohort, which allowed her to become a teacher in just four years. SDSU’s Integrated Teacher Education Programs (ITEP) allows students to earn a bachelor’s degree and teaching credential concurrently.

Field Trip to Seaworld!
Helix Education Pathway students visited Sea World and created lesson plans associated with animal exhibits for elementary and middle school students. Students then presented their lesson plans and obtained feedback from teachers and other team members.
Apprenticeship and Vocational Training Career Expo
This year’s SDCOE Apprenticeship and Vocational Training Career Expo will take place in person at the San Diego College of Continuing Education-Educational Cultural Complex, 4343 Oceanview Blvd. in San Diego, on Nov. 10 from 10 a.m. to noon.
Students will learn about various apprenticeships that serve as critical talent pipelines in key industries and occupations — from clean energy and infrastructure to public health and technology — and are an affordable post-secondary education option in which students receive a paycheck while learning specialized skills on a job site in preparation for a high-wage, high-growth career.

Join SDCOE and its partners for the 7th Annual Careers in Public Service Student Event March 1-17, 2023! This cross-sector student event highlights the in-demand careers in public service, from law enforcement and emergency response to public health and human services. Over the two and a half weeks, the agenda will feature an in-person half-day conference and in-person and virtual tours, classroom speakers, job shadows, open houses and more. Registration will open in December.

The San Diego Fire-Rescue Department are recruiting students for the winter cohort of their 2022 Cadet Program! This program combines hands-on training and classroom learning to provide students an introduction to professional firefighting careers with the City of San Diego and teaches them mental and physical wellness, leadership, teamwork, and fire prevention skills. Cadets will engage in the following activities…
- Cutting apart cars using vehicle extrication tools
- Practicing search and rescue techniques
- Practicing rope rescue techniques
- Learning CPR and advanced first aid
- Exploring different firefighting vehicles
- Fighting real fires in controlled scenarios

Who: To be eligible, students must be between age 16 and 21, have at least a 2.0 GPA, and maintain a 2.0 GPA throughout the duration of the program.

Join MITES- MIT's national online pre-college program
Join MITES Semester (formerly MOSTEC) for a six-month, hybrid learning STEM and college preparation experience. Become part of an inspiring community of intelligent, motivated, like-minded peers—while building the skills and confidence you need for success. Running June through December, this national program will take you through engaging, rigorous online courses and weekly virtual webinars, social events, workshops, and meetings with peers in the fall. You’ll also benefit from college admissions counseling and learn and network with STEM professionals.
Cost: Free of charge
All program-related costs are covered by generous individuals, foundations, corporations, and MIT. Students only pay for transportation to and from MIT for the conference.

Amazon Future Engineer (AFE) Scholarship - Application Deadline, Friday, 1/20/23
Applications are now open for the AFE Scholarship program.
This program offers a $40,000 college scholarship to students who intend to study computer science in college, plus guaranteed paid internship opportunities at Amazon that could provide students with multiple opportunities to launch their careers even before the last bell rings!
This year, 100 high school seniors across the nation will be chosen to receive $40K for college and a guaranteed internship at Amazon following their freshman year in college.
Regardless of the outcome, preparing for this application could also help students prepare submissions for other valuable scholarships and opportunities in computer science and STEM.
KEY INFO AT A GLANCE:
- Applications are now open and will close January 20, 2023.
- Students must be high school seniors enrolled or previously enrolled in computer science-related coursework. (Students who have not taken CS coursework may take an assessment offered by Amazon.)
- $40K scholarship is awarded at $10K / year towards a 4-year degree.
- Students must have a minimum cumulative grade point average of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale (or its equivalent).
- Students must demonstrate financial need.

Bank of America's 2022 Student Leaders Paid Community Service Internship Program - Deadline to apply: January 13th, 2023
Bank of America is recruiting high school juniors and seniors for their Student Leaders paid community service summer internship program to prepare the next generation of community leaders who will tackle our society’s most pressing issues.
Each year, Bank of America recruits over 300 students from around the country to work for 8 weeks during their summer break at a nonprofit, such as the Boys and Girls Club or Habitat for Humanity, and to participate in a national summit in Washington DC to learn how nonprofits, governments, and businesses collaborate to solve problems in our communities.
As a Student Leader, students will:
- Work as a paid intern at a local nonprofit for 8 weeks for 35 hours per week during their summer break
- Attend an all-expenses-paid Student Leaders Summit in Washington, D.C. from July 25th – 30th, 2022 (In-person events will be in line with local and national guidelines for gatherings and travel and may be subject to change)
- Develop leadership and career skills
- Connect with like-minded students from across the country
Applications are due no later than 11:59 pm Eastern on Friday, January 13, 2023. Student Leaders will be chosen and notified in April. The application requires multiple components, including letters of recommendation and a resume, so students should get started early!

Illumina SD2 STEM Scholarship, Deadline to apply: JANUARY 2ND, 2022
Applications have opened for our Illumina SD2 STEM Scholarship!
The scholarship provides financial support for underrepresented high school students in San Diego County that have an interest in pursuing a degree in a STEM-related field. Partnered with Illumina Corporate Foundation, each award is $2,500 and there are 4 available for the 2021 academic school year. AIA San Diego Women in Architecture Scholarship
The AIA San Diego WIA Scholarship is an architectural scholarship granted to San Diego High School students pursuing a career in architecture.
Their mission is to support, mentor and engage aspiring students and young designers in San Diego to pursue and remain in the architecture profession, with hopes of diversifying the field.
At least one $5,000 Scholarship will be awarded for the 2021-2022 School year.
Each award recipient will be asked to speak virtually on an AIA hosted webinar shared with (3) K-12 schools to share their story and inspiration for pursuing architecture in order to educate students and spark interest in the profession.

LPA, Inc. has established a scholarship program to champion the design professions among students from underrepresented demographics. We believe diversity and inclusion are essential to innovation, belonging, and representation. To that end, we aim to foster a culture where students feel that anything is possible regardless of their starting point. We want to grow, support, and mentor the recipients to attain their professional degree and advance the diversity of architecture and engineering disciplines that serve our communities and contribute to the built environment.
The program is administered by Scholarship America®, the nation’s largest designer and manager of scholarships, and other education support programs for corporations, foundations, associations, and individuals. Eligibility for individual programs is determined at the sole discretion of the sponsor, and eligible applications are reviewed by Scholarship America’s evaluation team.
