History of the Department of Agriculture
The Department of Agriculture was established on May 15th of 1862. President Abraham Lincoln was the one to formally establish the USDA. It was created to protect the citizens of this country from possible sicknesses that can be caused by agricultural foods. The Department of Agriculture creates standards and regulations on food preparation.

The main purpose of the department of agriculture in our lives today is to safeguard and ensure standards of quality in the daily food supply. It also seeks ways to make crops healthier for people by producing hybrids.
Tom Vilsack is the Nation's 30th Secretary of Agriculture. His job is to strengthen the agricultural economy, built vibrant rural communities, and create a stronger American middle class.
