#strongertogether shout out
Another example of how we can be #strongertogether! Shonda Moore and DeKalb Board of Health have stepped up the vaccination event with even more collaborators for Monday, August 2, 1 p.m. - 7 p.m. at DHS.
Join the City Schools of Decatur, DeKalb Board of Health, and the Decatur Education Foundation for the “Don’t Wait, Vaccinate!” event. This event will provide free vaccinations and hearing, vision, dental, BMI screenings, and other immunizations/vaccinations. To receive an immunization or vaccination, the child’s parent or legal guardian MUST be present. Any child between ages 12-17 receiving the COVID-19 vaccine must have proof of their age and a parent/guardian present. Any child under 18 receiving all other immunizations must have a parent/guardian present.
Several community organizations will participate, such as the City of Decatur, local Police and Fire departments, the community YMCA, Children's Hospital of Atlanta, Beacon Hill, the Wylde Center, and more.
Sports physicals will be available for individuals who attend the event. To register, students can email marie@decatureducationfoundation.org. Free food and school supplies will also be offered.
If you have questions about the event or any concerns, be sure to contact District Health Coordinator Shonda Moore at smoore1@csdecatur.net for more information.
Thank you, Nurse Moore, and all the collaborating partners! This is a shining example of how we are #strongertogether!!!
Ready for day one!
The first day of school is just around the corner!!! Can you believe it??? I am so excited to see students return to classrooms on Tuesday, August 3! Remember that getting ready for the 1st day of school is as easy as 1, 2, 3!
1 - Complete the CSD Annual Data Update in Infinite Campus
2 - Review and complete any School Level Forms - Schools will share information in their weekly communications.
3 - Complete the CSD Transportation and Nutrition Forms
Advisory Groups
As previously mentioned, I am forming two committees to advise the district as we make decisions on procedures to keep our students and staff healthy and safe. These two groups will be the Parent COVID Advisory Team and the Healthcare, Medical, and Science Advisory Team. If you would like to be considered for participation on one of these two committees, please complete the linked forms.
One of the areas I am committed to improving in CSD is clear, frequent, and transparent communication. To assist in ensuring accurate and transparent information is shared with our community, I started Tweeting! You can follow me on Twitter @SupFehrman to get real time updates, links to my Friday Follow-up, and much more!
Art Info
Back in June, I shared that I was looking for student art to frame and hang in the superintendent’s office suite. This week I received my first two submissions, and both are just darling! Nicholas’s and Jonah’s were the first submissions I received!
Share this information with your children to submit their artwork to be displayed in the Superintendent’s Office Suite! I am looking for art that reflects the neighborhoods in the City of Decatur, either the name of the neighborhood, a quintessential place in a neighborhood, a historical figure from our neighborhood, or the neighborhood school. We will frame the students' work and hang it in our office suite.
Updates to Mitigation for Day 1 of School
City Schools of Decatur has been transparent throughout the planning process for the 2021-2022 school year that as guidance from the CDC is updated, we will review our mitigation strategies and update them as needed. On July 27, the CDC updated their recommendation regarding masks in schools stating “CDC recommends universal indoor masking for all teachers, staff, students, and visitors to K-12 schools, regardless of vaccination status. Children should return to full-time in-person learning in the fall with layered prevention strategies in place.”
Based on this updated CDC guidance, City Schools of Decatur updated our masking policy to align with this new guidance from the CDC to mandate masks for all staff and students in all CSD facilities. City Schools of Decatur is committed to providing students with in-person learning and at this time, universal masking is an essential component for that to happen.
We have also been closely monitoring the rate of COVID-19 cases and the transmission of the Delta variant. Based on the current trajectory of virus transmission, we decided to begin the school year with standard 10- or 7-day quarantine options. We will continue to monitor local data and determine whether it is feasible to implement the previously described Option 2 after Labor Day.
We will continue our contact tracing procedures this school year. Your primary contact will be your school nurse. We have updated our procedure for contact tracing outside of the school day. If we are notified of a positive case after school hours or evening hours and weekends, parents may receive an email and/or text letting them know about a possible exposure. Parents will receive additional information the following school day confirming whether or not their child is determined to be close contact. This will allow the additional time needed to contact trace.
Additionally, we have updated the CSD webpage to house all COVID information on our School Health Page. This page will include all mitigation information as well as the data tracker for COVID cases in our school buildings.
