Principal's Corner
Last week, our fourth, fifth, and eight grade students did an amazing job completing part of their FSA tests. Also, our entire staff worked as a team making sure that we could create the best environment in our school to complete the respective testing sessions.
This week, we continue testing our students, who will be able to show everything they have learned through the 2017-2018 school year. Our third, fifth, sixth, and seventh grade students will be testing this week. Please log on to our website for the latest version of the Spring Testing Calendar.
On a more personal note, I would like to share with you that I consider this past Friday, April 20th, one of the most important days in my life. I took the Naturalization Oath of Allegiance to the United States of America, becoming a US citizen. It is such an honor for me to be able to say that I am an American citizen.
In The Spotlight: Ms. Nelson
When and why did you decide to work as an educator? When I was in high school, I decided to enroll in a course which allowed the students to volunteer off campus in an effort to gain insight into a possible career choice. I chose to volunteer at a local elementary school in a kindergarten classroom. After shadowing the teacher for a few weeks, she allowed me conduct whole group lessons following lessons I had created. The moments I shared with these students as they grasp the concepts and skills presented will resonate with me forever. The enjoyment I felt in the kindergarten classroom setting made me want to pursue a career as an educator. As an educator, you are able to provide new experiences to the students and guide them to gain a better understanding of the world around them.
If you were not a working at a school, what would you be? I would be a photographer who traveled the world to capture moments in time. I enrolled in the course of photography as a high school student which sparked my interest. We were required to purchase a camera with no flash, which forced us to learn the technique of using natural light to capture a memorable photograph. We developed our own photos after learning the process and practicing numerous times in the darkroom. Being able to tell someone that you not only captured the photo, but you developed it yourself, was such a rewarding moment.
What’s the most satisfying part of your job as our special program coordinator? Being apart of an amazing team that works diligently to provide our students with the necessary supports to meet their needs in order for them to be successful. Every student deserves to feel happiness in accomplishing their goals. My job allows me to work with all the stakeholders of our school; students, staff and parents. Building close relationships with each of the stakeholders allows my team to help the students achieve success in the school or home setting.
What do you like to do on your free time? I love to travel and experience new things. Exploring a new place and having a local show me around brings me so much enjoyment. The locals are able to show you the best places to explore according to the people that live there, not something on a tourist guide.
What is your favorite memory at Franklin Academy? This is such a hard question to answer because it is challenging to pick just one. Unforgettable moments occur on a weekly, even sometimes on daily basis. When I share stories of the school day with my family and friends, I always tell them that the past three years working at Franklin Academy has been wonderful due to the staff and students we have. I would say that my favorite memories involve building amazing relationships along the three years and being able to say, "we are not just a school, we are a FAMILY."
