Ice Cream Wars are Coming
Next week students will have an opportunity to participate in Relay for Life Ice Cream Wars! Flyers are coming home today and students will be allowed to turn in their money next week. Please make sure you check your child's folder for information about how they can participate in this fun event!
Coming Up Next Week
Next week, students will practice comparing and contrasting texts about characters and their experiences using fairy tales. Students will compare how stories such as The Three Pigs and The True Story of the Three Little Pigs are alike and different. Students must have a clear understanding of the meaning of words "alike" and "different" to master this skill. Students will also have an opportunity to identify the difference in words with long and short vowels by listening carefully to what they hear in words. In science students will begin to explore the characteristics of animals by learning about mammals, birds, reptiles, amphibians, and fish. They will use their new learning by participating in shared research (with prompting and support) about an animal of their choice. Students are expected to research facts about their animal and use this to write their opinion of the animal and use the word "because" to support their opinion as well as the facts they learned about their animal. At this time of the year, students should be able to compose 2-3 sentences about a topic using simple words that are clear and easy to understand. Students should be able to use "word analysis" to hear and record the sounds they hear in words. Writing should include some punctuation marks and the errors should not interfere with the meaning of their writing. In math, students will use what they have learned about addition to explore and understand addition word problems. You can help with this at home by talking to your child about how two number "parts" are joined together to create a "whole" number. You can use fingers, real objects, and even acting out to help your child. Students need to understand that when we add two numbers together that they grow! We will be using drawings, ten-frames, parts/whole diagrams, and even number lines to help students. It is important that students be able to show and explain their "math thinking" and they arrived at the correct answer.
