Ridgeview 4th Grade
Mrs. Trapp & Ms. Holden
Ecosystem Diorama
Fourth grade students have been working on a life science unit for several weeks. As a culminating activity, they will be creating an ecosystem diorama, which will represent the interaction of biotic factors (plants and animals) and abiotic factors (nonliving elements i.e. water, rocks) within an assigned ecosystem. It will be left up to each student (and you) as to what they are going to use to create these models, but it is not necessary to spend a lot of money. Some examples of supplies from the past are: a shoebox, clay, Play-doh, plastic plants and animals, or even just construction paper. There are many ideas on Pinterest for those of you who use that website (just search ecosystem dioramas).
Please note: Mrs. Trapp's class will be working on these in the classroom. Supplies are due on Monday. However, this is a HOMEWORK assignment for Ms. Holden's class and these projects are due at school by Thursday February 4th.
All School Field Trip
As part of Ridgeview's positive behavior model, we will be taking an "all school field trip" as a reward. We will be doing a "Snow Day" on January 29th in place of P.E. that day for each grade level. We will be riding the bus to MCHS and having fun doing sledding, fort building and snowman making. Please be sure to sign your child's permission slip. On that day, send your child to school prepared with all their snow clothes (boots, gloves, snow pants, hat and warm coat) or we will not be able to take them.

Homework
One of the main goals of homework is to create opportunities for students to interact with their parents. Research has consistently shown that parental involvement in a child's learning is a key factor in that child's achievement in school. It is important that students are completing all aspects of the homework: reading logs, spelling practice and math practice.
- Homework reinforces skills, concepts and information learned in class.
- Homework prepares students for upcoming class topics.
- Homework teaches students to work independently and develop self-discipline.
- Homework encourages students to take initiative and responsibility for completing a task.
- Homework allows parents to have an active role in their child's education and helps them to evaluate their child's progress.
- Homework activities relate what is learned in school to children's lives outside of school and helps to connect school learning to the real world.
