Performance Assessment Design in Three Modes of Communication with Dr. Jennifer Eddy

How do we design Integrated Performance Assessment? How can we move students to higher performance targets toward the Seal of Biliteracy? Students often learn and are assessed in limited contexts with highly predictable or forced choice items that hinder proficiency goals.

This professional learning opportunity will guide teachers on transfer task development in the three modes of communication in the World Readiness standards: Interpretive, Interpersonal, and Presentational. These tasks are designed for learners to engage critical thinking skills with intercultural competence and to solve problems and create products of value beyond the classroom.

This hands-on design day will guide teachers to develop performance-based assessment tasks with the three communicative modes and write "Can Do" self-assessment statements for each mode. Participants will have a gallery walk of tasks and receive feedback, ready for pilot implementation in their classrooms. Participants will also take part in feedback surveys before and after the live professional development.

In this workshop, George will discuss the idea and characteristics of "The Innovator's Mindset". He'll share powerful examples on why this is so crucial for all educators.

This full-day workshop is meant for leaders to help others within their organization not only accept change, but embrace it, to create better powerful leaning opportunities for our learners. It is not focused on the "how-to" of technology, but on the conversations that will help staff move forward in a way that they will be excited yet feel supported in their journey.


"Sharing the Blue Crayon" author Mary Anne Buckley

Mary Anne Buckley is the author of the 2015 publication "Sharing the Blue Crayon: How to Integrate Social, Emotional, and Literacy Learning" and is currently a teacher in the Victor schools. She will share her expertise Wednesday, December 5 from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

With over 20 years of experience teaching preschool through second grade, Buckley began incorporating social emotional learning (SEL) while teaching in Virginia.

"In Virginia, the school I was teaching at was very diverse," recalled Buckley. "Out of twenty kindergarteners, I would have one native English speaker. Students were from Central America, Asia and the Middle East. I found that I needed to bring all cultures, customs, and social norms together more cohesively so that our school family could cooperate and collaborate more effectively."

"I have a regular meditation practice and one of the first SEL skills I brought into my classroom was Moments of Peace. A short, quiet guided meditation that allows all of us to pause and appreciate the day. I saw the impact it had on how students talked to one another during disagreements and I started to learn more and more about the brain, stress and SEL."

Buckley believes that alleviating stress is an important part of teaching. Participants in her professional development session will focus on developing lessons that support both academic and SEL. "It's not one or the other - they complement one another," Buckley added.

"There will be some lessons that can immediately be brought back into the classroom to establish SEL. More importantly, teachers will learn how to observe their students to make instructional decisions that blend academic requirements with powerful social and emotional skills the students need to be successful in and out of the classroom."

In addition to the one-day session, Buckley is offering an individual follow-up session to allow participants to try lessons and techniques in their own classrooms on their own time. This allows them to get clarification, share success stories, and delve deeper into planning lessons that support student SEL and academic growth.
