Charlestown School Updates
For members of our learning community - Oct. 13th, 2017
Planting a Rain Garden!
The Outdoor Classroom is coming along and it is exciting to watch the progress!!!
We are always looking for support with this project. We are thinking that some materials might be needed to create a split rail fence along the rain garden. Please let us know if you are able to donate materials or labor for this or any other component of this project.
Thank you to our Fire Fighters!
Our Kindergartners enjoyed learning about fire prevention from local Charlestown Firefighters Joe Weeden and Julie Ellen. They also loved learning about the fire fighting gear! Thank you for coming to visit!
Gr. 3 and 4 - Social and Emotional Learning Survey
Building Social Emotional Learning Skills for all students is an important goal for our school this year! Students and teachers continue to participate in experiences to better understand these concepts and to reflect on how they perceive these skills in themselves. One of our summer Professional Learning Days was focussed on Social and Emotional Learning. We use the Zones of Regulation lessons and techniques building-wide and provide direct Zones instruction in grade one health lessons.
Between October 16-27, students in grades 3 and 4 will be asked to complete an online questionnaire that encourages them to reflect on their own mindsets and approaches to learning. This questionnaire should only take between 15-20 minutes.
It is our goal to help students and learn more about themselves by completing this process. The information that is collected in the questionnaires will be shared with your child (as appropriate) and with their teacher for informational purposes. It may also be used to help provide more support to students as needed.
If you have questions about this process or if you’d like to learn more about how these activities help meet our 2017-18 goals, please contact me.
Attendance Counts
Communicable Diseases and Exclusions
A school nurse-teacher shall have the authority to exclude any child showing an unusual skin eruption, sore throat, disease of the eyes, or any other communicable disease. A physician should be consulted as soon as possible.
A child excluded on account of having, or being suspected of having, a disease for which isolation is required shall not be readmitted until he or she presents a certificate to the nurse from a physician stating that the condition was not communicable, or that recovery is complete.
The school nurse-teacher may designate an absence as ‘exempt’ when a child is dismissed from school due to fever or other apparent or documented illness.
Per the district attendance policy , we have started to mail attendance memos and letters.
We mail them home to families, even if we are aware that a family has been on vacation.
Please understand that we need to follow policy and provide this written notification and follow both the timelines and guidelines of the policy.
