BROOKDALE BOBCAT PRINTS
September 30, 2019
Principal Message
I hope families are settling into the routines of the school year by now! At Brookdale, students and teachers are working hard each and every day.
As we move into fall please be sure that your child(ren) are dressed appropriately for the weather – students go outside every day. This means leaving the house with a sweatshirt, sweater, or jacket daily. It is helpful to put your child’s name inside the jacket in case it gets left on the playground.
CONFERENCE EARLY DISMISSALS
Our student led conferences will begin this Monday, September 30th and continue through Thursday, October 3. Students in kindergarten through fifth grade will be dismissed at 12:00 p.m. Sack lunches will be served. Please be sure that you have made plans for your student(s) for these early dismissal days.

Jonathon and Arinta received a $10.00 Walmart gift card from Mrs. Holman to enjoy. Remember, each month your child has good (no more than one tardy, early release, or absence) or perfect attendance his/her name will be added to the drawing for that month. Way to go!
SBA ASSESSMENT REPORT
Parents of current fourth and fifth grade students will receive their student’s SBA Score Report at their student-led conference. This report provides information about your child’s success on the Smarter Balanced Assessment given last spring. The SBA measures students’ knowledge and skills in English/Language Arts (ELA) and math (3rd – 5th grades.)
There are many ways to measure progress in school. The SBA & WCAS are just a couple of them. Your child’s current teacher is planning to talk to you about this report, and other progress your child is making, during conferences.
Reminders
NO CELL PHONES PLEASE – Please review the Family Resource Handbook regarding cell phones at Brookdale. They SHOULD NOT be seen or heard on school property during school hours. When phones go off during class it causes an interruption of learning. We are NOT responsible if the cell phone is lost, broken or stolen at school. Thank you for your understanding and support with this matter.
SCHEDULE CHANGES - The end of the day at Brookdale is very hectic. If you forgot to send a note in the morning (which is preferred) and need to call the school with a change to your child’s schedule, please do so before 3:00 p.m. After 3:00 the office is busy assisting students and parents and will not be able to answer your call or get a message to a student before they leave for the day. All end of the day schedule changes must be made through the office, not with the classroom teacher. Thank you!
ATTENDANCE COUNTS
You have always known that good attendance contributes to successful students, but this year we have some very important procedures, which need to be followed:
1. Good attendance is to miss 9 or fewer days per year (average one per month).
2. After 7 absences, we will require third party documentation (doctor or dentist notes, court hearing, etc.) to excuse the absence. Please get in the habit of getting a note from any appointments, even before you hit that threshold.
3. We will contact you for a conference if your child has 3 unexcused absences, or 5 absences in a month (excused or unexcused.)
4. Chronic absenteeism is more than 18 days in a school year.
I want to encourage all our Bobcats to be at school ON TIME, EVERY DAY, ALL DAY!
WHEN A STUDENT CAN RETURN TO SCHOOL & HOMEWORK
The beginning of this school year has hit our Bobcats hard with different kinds of illnesses. Please remember that your child cannot return to school until they have been fever and/or vomiting free for 24 hours.
REQUEST FOR HOMEWORK – If your child is absent for one day, children can pick up their missed work the day they return. If you know your child will be home at least two (2) or more days, you may call for their homework in the morning. Please allow one full day for the teacher to gather up work. Also, please contact the school office (a planned absence form must be filled out) or send a note to your child’s classroom teacher well in advance if your student will have an extended planned absence.
IF BROOKDALE’S NUMBER SHOWS UP ON YOUR CALLER ID
If you ever get a call from Brookdale, please listen to the voicemail (it might take a few minutes to come through) we leave before calling the school. Regardless of who called, the main office number will show up on the caller ID. The office gets many calls saying “the school called” but has no idea who the caller was. All staff members will leave a detailed message on your voicemail if they call your home or need a call back from the parent.
