Two-Step Authentication
Over the last few months we have seen an increase in phishing attempts and other malicious attacks on computer systems and networks both locally and worldwide. It may often be overlooked, but as educators and facilitators, we interact with and store a lot of sensitive data throughout our day to day tasks. It is our obligation to protect the personal information of our students, parents, staff, and others in the communities we support and service. One vital way we can protect our data and ourselves online is by securing our user accounts. One of the most important ways we can accomplish this is by keeping our access and credentials secure by implementing Two-Factor or Two-Step Authentication.
So what is Two-Step Authentication? Two-Step Authentication adds one more ‘step’ to your login process. Normally when logging into a website or application, you simply input your username and password. However, when an application or site allows Two-Step Authentication, after you put in your password, Two-Step Authentication requires the user to type in an OTP or one-time password. This OTP can be sent via multiple methods including SMS/Text, Email, or utilizing an app like Google Authenticator. This extra step adds more security to your account. If someone ever learned what your password was, they still would not be able to login as you, because they still would need the extra step which would include the OTP, which is sent to your device, not theirs.
While not every application or website currently supports Two-Step Authentication, when it does, turning this on for both personal and work related accounts is the best defense against unauthorized access. We highly recommend turning this feature on wherever available.
