Unami United
January 20, 2017
Dear Unami Parents, Guardians & Students,
This Wednesday will mark the close of the first semester, with an early dismissal day. We will begin the day with our Unami United community service project, detailed below. If students have not already done so, there is still time to bring in socks, crackers and granola bars. See details below.
All grade level teams have made special plans for the day. As an example, students on Team Granite are going to take this opportunity to engage in some team building challenges and some reflection. Students will attempt to build objects using Connex based upon a brief viewing of an example piece. They will also engage in races that require cooperation and organize themselves according to certain criteria without talking. In addition, students will complete a mid-point reflection using Microsoft Forms and write a letter to a 6th grader who is preparing to attend Unami.
Our morning will culminate with our second school-wide positive assembly, planned and delivered by our student council representatives.
As you know, program planning for the 2017-18 school year is well underway. Each week our guidance department will highlight important information, upcoming events and deadlines.
On Tuesday, January 26th, all 9th grade students will be taking a field trip to see Shakespeare's, Romeo and Juliet performed on stage at the Media Theater. Look for highlights in our next letter.
We hope you enjoy our letter!
Unami United,
Mrs. Lang
Principal
CREW SOCKS NEEDED FOR JANUARY'S COMMUNTIY SERVICE PROJECT...
During the month of January, Unami's Student Council is sponsoring a collection for The Giving Tree as part of Martin Luther King's Day of Service. The Giving Tree is a local community service organization and Unami's Student Council will be working in collaboration with them by collecting donations of socks (specifically men's white, black, or white crew/tube socks), packs of crackers (cheese, not peanut butter!), and granola bars (again, no peanuts).
These donations will be distributed at a variety of shelters throughout the Doylestown, Montgomery, and Philadelphia counties.
Each homeroom will collect these items until January 25th. The homeroom that collects the most (per grade) will get a reward of soft pretzels, and the winning homeroom overall will get a pizza party.
Unami students are devoted to serving their community. CLICK HERE for more information on this non-profit organization.
Link 2 Unity Builds Relationships and Leadership
On the morning of Saturday, January 14 from 8:30-11:15 a.m., CB South First Link students coordinated and led the second Link to Unity retreat of the 2016-2017 school year. The retreat looked to “link” Unami students who were either recommended by staff or who expressed interest in attending. Unami students were led by the CB South students through series of activities involving leadership, teamwork, trust, understanding, perspective and kindness. After a snack break around 10 a.m., all students convened in a classroom to debrief on the activities and bring the themes of each together. At the conclusion of the morning, the Unami participants were officially “linked”. During the wait for parent pickup, students put some of the concepts they learned during the morning to use, spreading kindness throughout Unami by posting encouraging/positive notes on random lockers. Another really cool component of the morning – Unami 9th graders who had previously been linked returned to serve as leaders in training beside our CB South First Link leaders, helping them run activities. Thanks to the CB South First Link student leaders, our Unami leaders in training, all of our participants, and the parents who help their son/daughter get out bed to join us on a Saturday morning!
CB MIDDLE SCHOOL SURVEY RESULTS PRESENTATION
Dr. Scott Davidheiser, Assistant Superintendent for Secondary Schools, presented parents with the data collected from our Middle School Survey and asked questions of the group to obtain additional input from parents. Dr. Davidheiser's final middle school presentation/focus group will take place at Tamanend Middle School on Monday, January 23rd at 7PM in their auditorium. If you missed Unami's presentation, you are welcome at the Tamanend discussion. You can click here for the data presented at Wednesday night's meeting.
Thank you to all who attended!
