OFE - Summer Reading Incentive

Summer will SOAR…

When Students Read

Dear Parent(s)/Guardian(s):

Fun opportunities abound this summer to help your child continue to grow.

The McDowell County Public library is offering many fun activities at both the Old Fort and Marion Branches this summer. Please sign your child up to participate in the Summer Reading Program, “Build a Better World.” See the picture for the kick-off party and other details. As your child reads, he/she will have fun, earn prizes, and be better prepared for the start of school in August. This program is FREE.

You also have the option of having your child participate in the Barnes and Noble Summer Reading Program. Barnes and Noble marks its twenty-first year inspiring young readers in first through sixth grades have a summer filled with reading adventures - and earn a FREE book. The Barnes and Noble Summer Reading Journal is located here and a print copy will be given to students by their classroom teacher in grades Kindergarten through 4th.

If your child completes a reading log for either McDowell County Public Library’s Summer Reading Program OR the Barnes and Noble Summer Reading journal and returns a copy of one to Old Fort Elementary by September 2, 2017, he/she will qualify for a prize from Old Fort Elementary.

Thanks for investing in your child’s future by encouraging him/her to read. Have a great summer.

Sincerely,

Greta W. Fletcher

Library/Learning Commons Inventory

All library books were due on Friday, May 19, 2017. This week, an inventory will be taken of all items on the shelves. This inventory will "check in" any items that were shelved without being properly scanned in. At the end of inventory a report will be run of any items still listed under a student's name that has not been returned to the Library/Learning Commons. Please make every effort to locate and return those items. If the item is declared lost, a payment needs to be made. Items paid for before June 2, will be $5 per item. Any item paid for after June 3, will be the original cost as displayed on the library notice. Thank you for making every effort to return all library items.

4th Grade - N.C. Lighthouse Projects

Over the past few weeks, 4th grade studied the lighthouses of North Carolina. Their job was to become a tour guide and create a video of their speech. They focused on explaining the impact of technology on North Carolina's citizens, explaining why important buildings are associated with the state's history and using technology tools to present this information. They became adept at using WeVideo and the Greenscreen/ColorKey concept to record themselves "on location." Please enjoy a few of their projects by clicking on the links below . More will be added as they become available.

April 10-17, 2017 - Spring Break

Library Books

Encourage students to be on the look out over Spring Break for any library books they are missing.

April 3, 2017

Library Books

As we head into Spring Break, encourage students to checkout books that they can read for fun over break. I am going to run reports of books students have checked out. I will try to have them in teacher's boxes no later than Wednesday, April 4, 2017. Remind students to do a little spring cleaning and search for any books that are checked out under their name and return the to the OFE Library/Learning Commons.

Thanks for your patience this year as we gave students more "ownership" of the library collection by allowing self-circulation and shelving. I'm sure there are many books on the shelves that students did not check in properly. Please encourage them to come in and look for those books OR we can schedule a 15-20 minute "scavenger hunt" for the whole class to come in and look for their books. Also, when we scan for inventory, the inventory will pick up on any books not shelved properly.

After break we will make a concentrated effort to track down all books.

March 20, 2017

Mr. Moon's Reading Program

Mr. Moon's Reading Program

Old Fort Elementary is enrolled in Mr. Moon's Reading Program. (I received notice of this on Thursday, March 9, 2017)

This is not an extra "program" it is a "tag along" to whatever program you already have in place. All you have to do is determine whether or not your students have met any reading goals you have set. ( We did state that students will read 20-30 minutes per school night based on their grade level/teacher. This should cover anything you already have in place.)

You can also set the time period...as long as you have number of students reported to me by April 2nd. (It can be something already going on since the beginning of the year or since January...set a time period that is logical to you.)

I will need to know how many students have reached the reading goal by March 30th.
