Creative Assessment Alternatives
Here's hoping 2021 is the best one yet! I decided to concentrate on assessments that are fun yet give immediate feedback to us and our students. Gone are the days of tests taken on paper every Friday and brought home to be graded on the weekend (best intentions, right?). Studies have shown it is best practice to give feedback as quickly as possible. Most of these have free and premium versions.
Quizziz Quizizz is a quieter, more student-paced assessment than Kahoot! There are ready-made quizzes or you can create your own. You can log in with your Google account, search for quizzes, assign them in Google Classroom, shuffle question and answer options, show leaderboards and memes, and other choices. | Pear Deck Pear Deck is an add-on for Google Slides that adds interactivity, anonymity, and real-time responses. Pear Deck can be student-paced or teacher-led for in-person or virtual learning. Reports are generated via Google Sheets and the teacher can check for understanding as the slides progress. | Baamboozle Baamboozle is another assessment platform where you can search for pre-made quizzes. This platform allows you to have 8 teams and will divide the students as they log in. The answers are voiced and marked as correct or oops! |

Kahoot! Use Kahoot! to quickly create interactive learning games, or edit or reuse “kahoots” that have been created by other teachers. Students can access the game on their own digital devices using an assigned PIN, and teachers can simultaneously broadcast the kahoot on an interactive whiteboard to increase classroom engagement. | EdPuzzle EdPuzzle uses video as a way to keep kids engaged and assess their understanding. Teachers can either create videos or select pre-made ones on specific topics. Students then watch the video and answer the questions embedded within. The video will stop and a question pops up, and for students to move forward, they have to answer the question. | Go Formative Formative is very much similar to the others I have listed. You can search by topics for an assessment, assign in Google Classroom or to guest students, and give them a code to join. This one may ask you to watch a Brainpop or YouTube video before starting the assessment. Results show up on the teacher screen as students answer. |

Quizlet Quizlet is one of the original digital flash-card-based assessment sites. There are many activities including practicing spelling, taking tests, matching, and live games that reinforce vocabulary. | Poll Everywhere for Google Slides This add-on for Google Slides, Poll Everywhere, allows you to transform one-way presentations into a lively conversation with everyone in the meeting. With the smartphones and devices they use every day, participants can submit live responses and watch them update directly on the shared screen. | Quizalize What sets Quizalize apart from the other assessment sites is that it is searchable by standards (TEKS), subjects and grade levels. It then further asks if you want a quiz, PDF, video from YouTube, or weblink. |
