Franklin Academy
March 11th, 2018
Principal's Corner
This past week, our students from grades fourth through seventh completed the 2017-2018 FSA Writing test; that is a total of 628 students! Our administration team appreciates the role that every staff member and student played this week in the test session! We also want to thank our wonderful parents who made sure that all our students were in attendance. Testing such a large group of students is never an easy task! It was truly a group effort!
This week, Franklin Academy Sunrise Campus will show our support for Marjory Stoneman Douglas and all those affected by dressing down on March 14th, 2018. Staff and students are allowed to wear MSD school colors, maroon and gray, to express our unity with MSD.
Franklin Academy Sunrise Campus is #MSD Strong!
In The Spotlight: Mrs. Ockman
This week, we want to hear from Mrs. Ockman, our Director of Schools Operations.
When and why did you decide to work in a school? In 2003, I was a new mom and was working 80 hours a week running camps and an aftercare program. I knew I loved working with children and families but needed more time with my own. I found the most amazing job as a Guidance Counselor in a private school and I knew I'd found my place.
What do you exactly do as our director of school operations? My job is to oversee the day to day operations of the school on the non-academic side of things. I work with all the vendors who take care of the facilities, including the county, alarms, maintenance and the cleaning company. I also oversee clubs, field trips, event logistics, and of course arrival and dismissal!
What’s the most satisfying part of your job? I would have to say being surrounded by a team who care about children the way I do.
What do you like to do in your free time?? I am not familiar with free time! I am married for nineteen years this month, and we are raising two kids, 11 and 16 years old. Their social and academic lives are busy! I also make custom chocolates for an event business I started when my life was a lot quieter!
What is your favorite memory at Franklin Academy? This will make my colleagues laugh, but I must say it was my first month here when I started, and was informed we, as in the Leadership team, would be physically switching all the lower school furniture from one side of the building to the other. It was that day I realized I had joined a team who was willing to roll up their sleeves, jump in and get a job done. I feel honored to be a part of this Franklin family.

Eighth Grade Vision Boards Project
Our amazing Career Education and Entrepreneurship teacher, Ms. Simmonds, wants to share the great jobs her eight grade students did with their Vision Board Project.
"I am very proud of the work and dedication they put forth to demonstrate where they see themselves and what their dreams/goals are for the future"

We would like to thank Ms. Scott, our MYP Arts teacher, for her hard work in designing a logo for our IB program that demonstrates our aspirations and expectations at Franklin Academy. The final result is simply amazing.
Thank you, Ms. Scott!
Our Sun-Risers of the Week
Parent: The one parent or I should say Grandparent, that stood out to me this week was Mr. Jose Vera. He is the grandfather of Gianfranco Sanguinetti. He is always helpful in the carline and regardless of how many hours he has, he is always happy to help with a smile on his face.
Staff Member: Here at Franklin Academy, we are very proud to have Mr. Singh. He shines both in and out of his classroom. He engages students with meaningful discussions and brings ancient civilizations to life. Students in his class are encouraged to make connections between the past and their current lives. He sees the potential in each one of his students. Mr. Singh is also a valuable team player amongst the Franklin Academy staff. He looks for ways to help and build community within the school. We are proud and honored to have Mr. Singh at Franklin Academy!
Student: During the past few months, I have personally observed a student who is very committed to her own education and is putting an enormous effort to become a very successful eighth grade student. Devine Jackson is the perfect example of a great student with exemplary character. We are very proud of you!
Community: This week, I would like to thank the local Bank of America branch, and particularly our parent Mr. Visnjic, for providing to us the necessary materials to launch a finance program for our sixth graders. Mr. Visnjic didn't hesitate when asked for help and due to his efforts, our students are to participate in this wonderful project.
