Duanwu Festival 端午节


Also known as double fifth the Dragon Boat Festival is held every year on the 5th day of the 5th lunar month.

In 278 BCE, Qu Yuan, poet and states man of the Chu Kingdom during the Warring States Period committed suicide, After being banished for opposing the alliance; Yuan was accused of treason. During his exile he committed suicide by drowning himself in the Miluo River on the 5th day of the 5th lunar month. Locals who admired Yuan were said to have paddled boats; either to have scared the fish from eating the body or to retrieve his body. This is said to be the origin of the Dragon Boat Racing.
