Shepard News & Notes
January 27, 2017
Hello Shepard Families:
Second quarter report cards will be posted on Family Access this afternoon. You will be able logon to Family Access, click on the “Portfolio” section, and download the report. We hope that you will find an opportunity to have positive discussions about your child’s grades and overall academic experience.
Honor roll certificates will be posted on Family Access in approximately one to two weeks. Please contact Cathy Kedjidjian (ckedjidjian@dps109.org) if you have any questions about Family Access. If you have questions about grades, please contact your child’s teacher(s).
As a reminder, the reports will use the new standards based grading and reporting (SBGR) format. Assistant Superintendent for Teaching & Learning Dr. Jeff Zoul has sent several comprehensive communications regarding this shift. A few things of note:
The first quarter report was a "progress report," which included comments that are more general in nature about the subject matter covered. This second quarter "report card" will include comments from teachers that are specific to your child's academic performance and educational experience.
If you see blank scores on the report, it means that the strand was not assessed at that time.
Honor Roll will be determined twice this year, coinciding with the issuing of Report Cards after quarters 2 and 4. Eligibility for Honor Roll is as follows: There will be two levels of honor. “Distinguished Model Scholars” are students who receive all 3s and 4s academically for each course (which equates to a letter grade of an "A" in each course) and all 3s on Habits of Success. “Model Scholars” are students who receive all 3s on Habits of Success.
If you have general questions about standards-based grading and reporting, please contact me, or Dr. Zoul (jzoul@dps109.org), our District SBGR expert.
Warm Regards,
John
1st/FINAL Posting - Optimist Club Student of the Quarter Awards!
Each quarter, the Optimist Club of Deerfield--a volunteer organization that seeks to promote patriotism, good citizenship, and a belief in giving to others--recognizes 3 students from each grade level. These students have demonstrated good citizenship, perseverance, and service to others. The Shepard staff nominated students to receive this award, and then vote on the top three most deserving students at each grade level.
This award is also shared with the staff member each student felt made the biggest difference for them during the quarter. Congratulations to all of our students and staff of second quarter!

2nd/FINAL Posting - Survey: Coordinating District 109 & 113 Calendars
District 113 (Deerfield High School) is considering future changes to their calendar in order to move first semester finals before winter break. Any changes that District 113 chooses to make would not take effect until the start of the 2018-2019 school year; approximately 20 months from now. One of the options District 113 is considering would move the start date of school earlier in August (for the 2018-2019 school year, the exact date would be August 13, 2018). Other options under their review include unbalanced semesters and no change to the traditional calendar. Parents of students at Deerfield High School should have the opportunity to take a survey from District 113 that clearly articulates potential calendar shifts.
Historically, when the school calendars are created, District 109 closely follows the District 113 calendar, which includes having similar start dates for students. However, given that we do not administer final exams like the high school, we are interested in gathering District 109 opinions on if or how we should adjust our calendar in the event of a significant change in the Deerfield High School calendar.
Please click to take a very short survey about the District 109 calendar. The survey closes February 1.
