15 Remote Pedagogical Approaches to Remote Learning

Ross Morrison McGill recently published an article on 15 Remote Pedagogical Approaches to Remote Learning on his Teacher Tool Kit blog. I am not advocating for implementing ALL 15 of these recommendations but glance it over. Focus on one or two strategies that work with your style, and try to integrate those strategies into your remote learning lessons. Side note, at the top of the blog post it informs us it should be a 5-minute read. I’m not sure about you, but quick hitters like this article are a major plus in my schedule!

Get Stuff Done Club & InstaStrategies

STARTING TOMORROW! The Get Stuff Done Club will hold two, one-hour zoom sessions, every Wednesday from 12 to 1 and then 1 to 2. If you can not attend at those times, the sessions will be recorded and uploaded to the Empower site. Every Wednesday will be a quick demonstration of an educational strategy from one of 4 popular educational books. The format of each session will be a quick demo (15 minutes or less) followed by Q & A and collaboration time.

1st Wednesday of the Month - Feel The Rush (EDrenanline Rush)

2nd Wednesday of the Month - Don't Kill the Wonder (Ditch That Textbook)

3rd Wednesday of the Month - What's the Protocol? (EDUProtocols)

4th Wednesday of the Month - What's the Play Coach? (DL Playbook)

To join the meeting this Wednesday, click HERE for the 12 o'clock session or HERE for the 1 o'clock session, or email me and I will send you the Zoom link directly.

IMPORTANT: Make sure you are signed in with your Zoom account, or you will not be admitted from the waiting room. Sorry, I'd rather be safe than sorry!

Absence Makes the Heart Grow Fonder

As per the district's request to limit our exposure, I am going to temporarily suspend my rotational schedule. However, I would still like to make myself available at your convenience. Therefore, I have created a sign up on Calendly. Click on the link provided and you can sign up for a 1 on 1 Zoom. Available time slots will be visible, just select a date and time that works best for you. Once you sign up, I will email you a Zoom link for the session. As always, feel free to text, email, or call. Link to sign up: https://calendly.com/60withsaint/30min

Remote Learning Activities, Templates, and Tutorials

Have an idea, just not sure how to execute it? Use this resource for inspiration, motivation, or make a copy of a template and customize it to fit your needs. Matt Miller posted the resource, 100 Remote Learning Activities, Templates, and Tutorials, on his Ditch That Textbook blog. You don’t need to scroll through all 100, they are categorized into 8 different topics and a hyperlink for each topic has been inserted for you below. Just click a topic that may interest you:

Google Templates for Students

Here is another resource that I thought might be valuable. Google Templates for Students are templates on the TCEA site that you can make a copy and personalize for your students. The templates range from interactive activities like ‘Ask and Respond’, ‘Jigsaw Learning’, ‘Vocabulary Slide Decks’, ‘Infographics’, and many more. See if there is something here for you, or if you want to have a conversation on how to implement and integrate one of these templates into your remote learning, we can do that also.

Using Your Phone as a Document Camera

I know this post won’t be the most popular topic, but I have to file this one under the category of ‘Where there is a will, there is a way’. There was a lot of chatter this week about connecting document cameras to Chromebooks. This isn’t a perfect solution, but here is a workaround. You could use your phone as a document camera! Interested in learning how, check out this resource from Practical Ed Tech. I understand that this isn’t ideal, but as I said, it’s a workaround. If you don’t feel comfortable with the Overview app, there is also a website called OBS Ninja. I vetted the site with Jeff Wood back in December.

If you are not comfortable using your phone as a document camera, that is ok. There are other alternatives and they all have pros and cons. Get in touch with us and we can discuss them.

I Lost It and Can't Find it

At some point and time, did I lend someone my copy of Ditch That Textbook by Matt Miller? I can't seem to find it anywhere.

Who Got Caught?

Has anyone noticed the new “I Caught” option on the Empower website? If you haven’t, head on over and check it out. The “I Caught…” form is courtesy of the Cyclone Learning Zone. I’m not going to spoil it, you’ll have to check it out. Here’s the link.

Tech Tool(s) of The WEEK

Empower Web Page

I am intentionally not introducing a new tool for the week. Stick to the tools that you are comfortable with and familiar with. There are plenty of resources to help you on the Empower Web Page. If you are looking for something more specific, then contact us and we can help you with your request. A new Tech Tool of the Week will reappear in the near future.

WCSD Informational Technology Website

The Informational Technology(IT) department is establishing a ticketing system to streamline the process of tracking technology issues. The ticketing system can be found using this link. (https://sites.google.com/watertowncsd.org/informationtechnology/home). This should be a website that you bookmark in case you need to reach out to the IT department.

Would you Mind Sharing?

It seems like it's been a year, but we made it through the first 4 months! I have been fortunate to witness colleagues finding their stride and using strategies and techniques that have helped with the start of this unprecedented school year. However, there are colleagues that could use some ideas on strategies and techniques that could help in their transition to this style of hybrid/remote learning. If you are willing to share, please click on the Google Form below so we can compile some strategies that have been effective for you. Just drop a quick note in the Google Form and I will be in touch. THANK YOU!!!

Feedback Welcomed and Encouraged
