FROM SCHOOL ADMINISTRATION
On Monday, the staff were given an awesome surprise outside the building. A great big THANK YOU to our little lions who decorated the front sidewalk with messages of appreciation and beautiful pictures! Ms. Hancock captured the pictures and shared them with staff so all could enjoy. We do not know who did this for us, but it was an amazing pick-me-up and greatly appreciated by all staff!
Seven weeks of online learning is complete. Time is certainly flying during our first quarter.
Our students are doing a fantastic job thanks to teachers and families around them to provide outstanding support! Your child’s learning is important, and although this may not be the learning that we imagined, the process is getting better as each of us learn strategies for engagement. Please continue to reach out to your child’s teacher, Ms. Wright, or me if you need any support or help.

DREAMBOX QUESTIONS
Some parents have asked about opting out of DreamBox due to concerns over students not liking the program. The HCPSS curricular office has decided DreamBox is the program that will be used for asynchronous Math instruction in grades K-5. This is not a choice for teachers, therefore a grade will be generated each week for DreamBox completion. The expectation for students is to complete 5 lessons per week. The rubric for DreamBox completion is:
- 3 pts for 5 lessons completed
- 2 pts for 3-4 lessons completed
- 1 pt for 0-2 lessons completed
The rubric was designed to ensure that DreamBox would not dominate the percentage of a student's grade. Teachers are working to have the total Math grade be a balance of classwork assignments, quizzes, and asynchronous work.
The county has made a decision to allow Prodigy as a choice in G/T classes only. This was based on the need to address different concepts that exceed the skills included in DreamBox.
INFORMATION WORTH REPEATING
UPDATES TO SCHOOL MEAL
A stopgap U.S. government funding bill signed into law last Thursday, which includes almost $8 billion in nutrition assistance, allows USDA to extend the meal waivers, previously due to expire at the end of December, through the end of the 2020-2021 school year. Thus, HCPSS will be able to provide meals at no cost to any HCPSS student, and all children 18 and under, through the entire school year, assuming continued availability of USDA funding.
As of Monday, October 12, all HCPSS added a snack and dinner to each weekday meal, in addition to breakfast and lunch already being served. Additionally, weekend meals will be included with meals provided on Fridays, and in pre-ordered meals picked up on Thursdays.
HCPSS also has adjusted the pre-order process. Meals for multiple days need to be pre-ordered at least two days in advance for pickup on Mondays and Thursdays. Pre-order meal pickups will be offered only on those two days, to enable Food and Nutrition Services to improve service and efficiency while balancing staffing and food resources.
Full details on HCPSS student meal offerings can be found online.
What if we need technical support?
