Nighthawk News
March 10, 2023
Inspiring passion and preparing all students to be college ready, future-focused and globally aware!
Happy Friday Nighthawks!
Every year, March is designated Women’s History Month by presidential proclamation. The month is set aside to honor women’s contributions in American history.
March is also Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month to increase “public awareness of the needs and the potential of Americans with developmental disabilities” and to provide the “encouragement and opportunities they need to lead productive lives and to achieve their full potential.”
As we soar into the beginning of a busy Trimester 3, with current 12th graders making decisions on future plans, and our 9th/10th/11th graders turning in CRF’s for next year's classes, I thought it would be a great opportunity to recognize our amazing Nighthawks and all of their achievements. Thank you for continuing to partner with DNHS as we build out our students' passion for learning and work to create learners that are passionate about the world around them, career and college ready, future focused and globally aware.
In Partnership,
Bryan Schultz

DNHS Link Crew - NOW accepting applications
Link Crew is a North American student leadership program. Its focus is on making select individuals from the Junior and Senior classes, known as "Link Leaders," into mentors for freshmen and new students.
The training process consists of team building, cooperative skill development, discussion skills, situation scenarios, and other activities. After two to four days of training, leaders are assigned six or seven freshmen to mentor. The program aims to expose incoming freshmen to a variety of positive experiences.
The program teaches students that by working together they can be successful to create a positive experience for freshmen. It claims to increase academic success through the peer support. It welcomes freshmen and makes them feel comfortable throughout their first year.
Link Leaders start the school year by helping at freshman orientation. This allows the Link Leaders to get the freshman class excited and develop relationships that will contribute to their success. After orientation Link Crew continues, providing academic and social follow-up activities throughout the year. Through this program, students learn that people at school care about them and their success.

Nighthawk Tutoring and Office Hours
Now that Trimester 1 is in the books, let's not miss the opportunities to use Nighthawk Tutoring and Office Hours to help students achieve their academic goals. Thanks to our Education Foundation, whose mission is to impact every student everyday, we are able to offer free tutoring to our students. Nighthawk Tutoring takes place on Monday and Wednesday evenings from 6:15 to 8:15pm in the DNHS Library. DNHS teachers support this program by offering their time to help students with Math, Science, English, Social Science and other subjects during the year. This free service will run through June. This is another Distinctively Del Norte program that we have built in to help support our students.
Aside from Nighthawk Tutoring, Del Norte offers other programs to support all students with any Academic subject they may need extra help with.
DNHS Peer Counselors offer academic tutoring. Please see Mrs. Hinds in the Student Support Services office in G118 for more information.
Our WHAT center provides writing support. Please see Mrs. Philyaw in G117 for more information.
Getting Nighthawks to the Nest on Time
Electric Bikes/Scooters
Managing the Nest
We cannot accept items to be picked up, or delivered to students during the instructional day in the front office. Please ensure that your Nighthawk has their lunch, phone, homework, clothing, athletic equipment, computer/chromebook, books, etc. that they need for school before dropping them off.
We ask that you partner with us to continually have conversations with your students about standing and doing the right thing. Our expectation at DNHS is that students work each day to be the best versions of themselves and help us keep the Nest safe. Please encourage your student(s) to let adults in our space know if they see something happening on campus that could endanger others. We want to keep DNHS a safe space that is free of drugs, vaping, alcohol and weapons, so that our students can focus on their academic and social emotional development. We appreciate the home-school partnership with our community.
Building Nighthawk Culture/Spirit
Part of the positive experience of high school is being involved and engaged in the learning community. As a learning community we want our Nighthawks to wear Blue and Green on Friday’s, to attend our sporting events and performances that are held throughout the year, as well as get involved in clubs and activities that interest them. . We want to partner with you and hope that you can encourage your Nighthawk to be involved and engaged in their Nighthawk Experience.
As parents and guardians you are members of the Nighthawk Nation! We hope that you will get involved in our various adult organizations, PTSA, Del Norte Education Foundation, Athletic Foundation, Music Foundation and other various booster groups that exist to help our faculty and staff provide a world class high school experience for your student(s).
