ELA
This week in ELA we will be working on how to quote accurately from a text, determine the theme of a story, drama, or play. We will continue to look at various characters and compare and contrast them. Use context clues to determine the meaning of unknown words. We will also be looking at finding the main idea of a given passage. We are still reading non-fiction and looking at how to remain safe during natural disasters. We are moving forward with writing a persuasive essay during writing. We are stating a claim and will defend it and back it up with facts.

Math
This week we are continuing do learn about dividing whole numbers. This is one of my favorite standards to teach, and it's taught the "old school way", so the way we all remember how to do! We will also be taking the Math Inventory on Monday and Tuesday, which will give us a clear idea of the growth students have made in their knowledge of math. As always, please reach out if you have any additional questions or concerns!

Science
In science our essential question continues to be "How do substances combine or change (react) to make new substances?". In this week's Mystery, students investigate the alchemists’ claim of transforming ordinary metals into gold. In the activity, The King's Sword, students use the vinegar, salt, and penny solution that they created in Mystery 1 to copper plate a steel nail. Students then create a conceptual model of how particles from the pennies are the same ones that eventually coat the nail in copper.

Social Studies
In Socials Studies this week we are working through learning about how the Constitution and our Government was built. We are looking at videos, text, and speeches to learn more. We are learning about the struggles our nation had in the beginning and how hard it was to come up with a plan that everyone could agree on. We will continue to learn about the different branches of government and how they work together to make sure no one has the most power.
