School Nurse/ Health Room

Skyview Families,

I would like to update you on an issue that has been occurring at Skyview. Students are texting their parents and telling them that they are sick and need to go home. Parents then come to pick up their child and the Health Room never knows that they left school sick. If your child texts you that they are not feeling well, PLEASE direct them to the health room PRIOR to coming to pick them up. There are a number of reasons why this is important.

First, we can evaluate your child and perhaps we can treat them so that they can stay in school or if we need to monitor symptoms of covid. Second, if we evaluate them, we know what brought them in to the health room. We check attendance logs and illness logs so we can see if there is an illness in a particular area. This is important because we can deep clean those rooms and we can try prevent an outbreak. Lastly, it is against our technology policy for children to text during the school day. We will never deny your child from contacting you and we will do this on behalf of your child.

We also monitor children that continue to come to the health room to see if there is an illness pattern. This also may assist the doctor when treating your child. Our goal is always to keep your child healthy and safe and we cannot do this without your cooperation. It is really important to let us know when your child is ill. With monitoring the Coronavirus per County and State guidelines, we have to have a plan and be able to keep students healthy and safe.

As always, we appreciate your collaboration in helping keep our students and staff healthy.

If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to reach out to Jennifer Debelak Health Para or Erika Radcliff, RN, BSN, School Nurse at 719-495-5562.

SKYVIEW SAC COMMITTEE

As the most recent survey came out on school and family engagement, it got me thinking…

Skyview SAC (School Accountability Committee) is one way that you can engage and influence your middle school. It is a great way to be involved and know what is happening at Skyview without embarrassing our kids. The SMS SAC committee meets once a month (except for October & March) to discuss, inquire and advise the building leadership. We discuss how the tax dollars that are allocated to us are spent, what direction the school should go with regards to the UIP (Unified Improvement Plan) and we share difficulties and ideas to solve them. Please put our final 2 meetings on your calendar: Thursday April 14th and May 12th. We do our best to keep meetings to 1 hour and they start at 5:30 pm in the library at Skyview. The agenda for the meeting should be available on the Skyview Website one week prior to the meeting (Skyview Middle School SAC Page)

Important: SMS CMAS 2022 Information

8th March, 2022

Dear Skyview Middle School Family,

With the combination of very warm days, followed by cold days, you know that spring is around the corner. With the change in seasons comes the time to measure the progress your child has made in the classroom this year.

Schedule:
Beginning on the 5th of April, all sixth, seventh and eighth-graders will participate in Colorado assessments of English language arts and math. Our eighth-graders will also take tests in science. The Colorado Alternate Assessment (CoAlt) and Dynamic Learning Maps (DLM) will be administered to our students in the RISE program.

These tests provide important feedback on the firm foundation we have built with each learner. While they do not define a student’s abilities and skills, they can impact how we deliver instruction to meet the unique needs of each student. As examples:

  • Teachers use these assessment results to plan with students and set goals to support their individual paths, planning for next steps in the learning journey.
  • Results from these assessments provide parents insight about academic student strengths and areas for growth, as well as information about how students compare to others across the state and nationally.
  • Our community is provided with information about how our school is performing overall.

Here are some things you can do at home to maximize your child’s success: feed your child a good breakfast the mornings of the assessment, ensure your child gets a good night’s rest, continue daily reading time at home, and continue to practice basic math.

On behalf of the entire staff, thank you for your continued support of your child, our teachers and our school. throughout this assessment season. Please contact me if you have any questions or concerns. If you wish to opt your child out of this important assessment participation, please email me before March 17th so that I am able to provide you with next steps. You can also access further information about our district and state assessment program at: http://d49.org/assessments.
